California Coast Wrestling Classic: Three Harbor wrestlers come away with medals

APTOS -- The California Coast Wrestling Classic in Aptos came to an end Friday evening and three of Harbor High's strongest grapplers came away with medals to hang on their bedroom wall.

Harbor's Dakotah Francis advanced to the finals but came up short in a 5-3 loss to No. 1 Gress Lawson of El Dorado in the 220-pound championship.

"We were both kind of equally matched," Francis said. "But the illegal point, I didn't think it would happen but it happened. That kind of screwed up me a little bit."

The illegal point came in the third period with less than a minute to go. Francis was penalized for taking down Lawson after the referee had blown the whistle. It gave Lawson the momentum and scored the match's winning two points on a near-fall with seconds left on the clock.

"He did all the things he needed to do and it just came down to the last takedown," Harbor coach Brendan Guinn said. "The guy scrambled out of it. It was kind of like a freak thing."

Still, it was a standout performance for the senior to get so far in a pool with other elite wrestlers -- even after he missed a week of practice with an injured shoulder. Guinn couldn't be any prouder for Francis.

"His first tournament coming out and taking second place, I'm stoked for him," Guinn said.

The other two members of the Pirates wrestling squad to win medals was junior Willy Lamacchia, who placed third in the 138-pound division, and junior Bryan Battisto,

who took seventh in the 160-pound division.

"I'm a little disappointed I wasn't able to be in the finals and win the tournament," Lamacchia said. "I felt like I wrestled average in the beginning of the day but I had a good third-place match and I got it done."

"I was missing a little bit of my upper and lower attack in my semifinal. I was just shooting and I didn't have any snaps or fake-shots, so he knew it was coming and he was able to stop it," Lamacchia added.

Other wrestlers from Santa Cruz County that received medals were Ramon Zacarias of Aptos (eighth at 120) and Michael Kraft of San Lorenzo Valley (8th at 145). Nico Guerrero, who lives in Santa Cruz but competes for Bellarmine Prep, finished in fifth place at 126 pounds.

Ponderosa was the top team by racking up 242 points, taking the tournament title from Elk Grove Senior by three points. Not far behind were Porterville (224), Madera (216.5), and Jesuit (140.5) to make up the rest of the top five. Harbor was the top finisher in the county with a 23rd-place finish and 66.5 points.

Despite the hectic holiday schedule, co-coordinator of the CCWC Ken Pollastrini was still pleased with the crowd and the amount of teams that showed up to the event.

"I think it was great, there was 65 schools that turned out," Pollastrini said. "So being two days after Christmas that's pretty good. The local schools did fairly well, it's a big tournament and we had several people place which was good. Some of these schools are top notch in California but overall they did fairly well being it's an early tournament in the season, we were all pretty happy with the way they did."

Newly discovered loris may be slow, but its bite is toxic

A new slow loris species was discovered in Borneo, named Nycticebus kayan.?The little primate weighs less than a pound.

The newly discovered slow loris primate (Nycticebus kayan) has a furry "face mask" distinct from other slow loris species.

A new small primate with a toxic bite and distinctive facial fur markings has been discovered in the jungles of Borneo.

The new slow loris species is found in the highlands of the island of Borneo and has been named Nycticebus kayan, after a major river, the Kayan, flowing through the region. The trio of scientists also found that two species previously considered sub-species in the Nycticebus genus are officially unique species.

"Historically, many species went unrecognized as they were falsely lumped together as one species," researcher Rachel Munds, of the University of Missouri Columbia, said in a statement.

Closely related to lemurs, the slow loris is found across Southeast Asia, from Bangladesh and China's Yunnan province to Borneo. To distinguish between species, the researchers focused on the seeming face masks of Borneo's slow lorises; fur patches cover their eyes, while their heads are covered with differently shaped caps. The examined photographs and museum samples for eight face mask features, finding there were four species of Bornean lorises. [See Photos of the Slow Loris Primates]

The new species to science, N. kayan, showed a dark, highly contrasting face mask, with dark patches around its eyes. From the specimen examined, the species is about 10.8 inches (273 millimeters) long and weighs about 14.5 ounces (411 grams). The other species include: N. menagensis, N. bancanus and N. borneanus. (N. menagensis had already been recognized as a species.)

The newly identified species illustrate the breadth of biodiversity yet to be discovered in the jungles of Borneo and nearby islands, the researchers noted. The slow lorises, as with other animals on these islands, face threats from human activity.

"The pet trade is a serious threat for slow lorises in Indonesia, and recognition of these new species raises issues regarding where to release confiscated Bornean slow lorises, as recognition by nonexperts can be difficult," said study researcher Anna Nekaris, of Oxford Brookes University in England, in a statement.

Munds, Nekaris and co-author Susan Ford of Southern Illinois University also note this week in the American Journal of Primatology that their results confirm the use of fur color and pattern as a valid way of distinguishing between species of small primates. Some researchers, they wrote, had claimed that because Bornean slow lorises are not a diverse group because they share similar cranial features and all are lacking an upper second incisor. The new study suggests otherwise, the team added.

US sailors sue Japan's TEPCO for post-quake radiation exposure

Nicholas A. Groesch / Reuters file

Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan wash down the flight deck to remove potential radiation contamination while operating off the coast of Japan providing humanitarian assistance in support of Operation Tomodachi on March 22, 2011.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

A group of U.S. Navy personnel involved in the humanitarian effort after Japan's March 2011 earthquake and tsunami have filed a lawsuit against the Tokyo Electric Power Co. for more than $200 million?in compensation, punitive damages and future medical costs for exposure to radiation that leaked from the damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant at the time.

The plaintiffs include eight troops serving on the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier ? one of whom was pregnant at the time of the alleged exposure ??and her?daughter.

They charge that the utility, known as TEPCO, "knowingly and negligently caused, permitted and allowed misleading information concerning the true condition of the (plant) to be disseminated to the public, including the U.S. Navy Department," according to the complaint filed on Dec. 21 in a U.S. federal court in San Diego.

?The plaintiffs are suffering a variety of symptoms that attorney Paul Garner says were caused by the exposure, including rectal bleeding, thyroid problems and?persistent migraine headaches, and all face an increased chance of developing cancer and requiring expensive medical procedures.

The U.S. carrier was positioned just offshore from the damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which and suffered a meltdown which triggered?the release of high levels of radiation into the air and water.

"The carrier was less than two football fields away from the Fukushima Daiichi when it released a cloud of radiation," said Garner, speaking to NBC News on Thursday.

He said the crew was unknowingly exposed to high levels of radiation in numerous ways, including when they cleared the carrier's decks of snow that was contaminated, and washed down the helicopters with sea water that was contaminated.

Archival video: Of all the aftershocks that could hit Japan, nothing frightens the world more than the possibility of a devastating nuclear disaster. NBC's Anne Thompson.

The complaint said that by relying on misrepresentations about the situation by TEPCO, the U.S. Navy was "lulled into a false sense of security," believing it was "safe to operate with the waters adjacent to the FNPP, without doing research and testing that would have revealed the problems."

It goes on to charge that through its conduct, TEPCO "rendered the Plaintiffs infirm and poisoned their bodies. The Plaintiffs must now endure a lifetime of radiation poisoning and suffering which could have and should have been avoided."

Archival video: Damon Moglen of Friends of the Earth discusses the potential dangers that still loom in Japan following an explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility.

The suit is seeking $10 million in damages for each plaintiff, plus?$30 million in punitive damages and a judgment requiring TEPCO to create $100 million fund to pay for their medical costs, including monitoring and treatments.

TEPCO could not immediately be reached for comment by NBC News.

A TEPCO spokesman reached by?The Japan Times?said the company had not yet received the complaint.

"We will consider a response after examining the claim," said Yusuke Kunikage, according to the Times.

Since the disaster, TEPCO has operated a fund to compensate victims in Japan.

Garner said that he didn't believe his clients would get justice through the Japanese system, which is why the suit was filed in a U.S. court. The complaint was served to TEPCO's office in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, he said.

"We need the U.S. justice system to make this right," Garner said.

Vatican paper lauds Italy PM Monti's election bid

ROME (Reuters) - The Vatican newspaper on Thursday praised Mario Monti's announcement that he may run in February's general election, signaling that Italy's technocrat prime minister had replaced Silvio Berlusconi as the Church's preferred politician.

Monti said on Sunday that he was willing to seek a second term if a credible, reform-minded political force backed his agenda ahead of the February 24-25 parliamentary election.

On Sunday Monti said he would "rise" into politics, a thinly veiled dig at four-time premier Berlusconi, who has always said he "descended onto the field" of public service in 1994.

Monti's message was "an appeal to recover the higher and more noble sense of politics that is ... to take care of the common good," the Vatican's Osservatore Romano newspaper wrote.

Italy remains overwhelmingly Catholic, and the Church has always played a role in domestic politics. During most of the 19 years that Berlusconi led the center right he enjoyed the backing of the Church hierarchy. He stepped down last year amid a burgeoning euro zone debt crisis and was replaced by Monti.

The Church began distancing itself from the 76-year-old Berlusconi before he resigned, after a sex scandal involving an underage prostitute and details of so-called "bunga-bunga" parties in his Milan villa emerged.

The center left led by Pier Luigi Bersani leads in the polls, at more than 30 percent, followed by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party that are both more than 10 percentage points behind.

Before Monti said he would enter the political ring, the four centrist parties together failed to attract more than 10 percent of the potential votes. No polls have been released since Monti's announcement.

NYC homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Seth Wenig / AP

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly speak to reporters after a Police Academy graduation ceremony Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, in New York.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Homicides and shootings in New York are at their lowest in a half-century, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday.

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly credited stepped-up policing for the 19.6 percent drop in homicides (from 515 last year to 414 through Friday) and the 15.9 percent decline in overall shootings (from 1,608 last year to 1,353).

That's the fewest homicides since the city started keeping such statistics in 1963, and it's dramatically lower than the record high of 2,245 set in 1990.

The most recent FBI figures show that homicides have been falling in most major cities in recent years, but the drop in New York far outpaces the national average decline of 4 percent from 2010 to 2011, the last full year for which federal figures are available.

Kelly said officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns," while Bloomberg singled out the city's participation in Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas, as a particular success.

"The fact that the safest big city in America is safer than ever is a testament to the hard work and determination of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day ? and it also reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Neither man specifically mentioned the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she leaves a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

The policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search anyone without cause and contend in court documents that three-quarters of all New Yorkers searched under it are African-American or Latino. A trial is set for March.

Michigan governor signs bill giving local governments fiscal options

(Reuters) - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed into law on Thursday a bill that gives options to cities and school districts for dealing with severe financial problems, including bankruptcy.

The law, passed by the Republican-controlled legislature earlier this month, allows local elected officials to choose between Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy, if the move is approved by the governor; an emergency manager; arbitration with a neutral party; or a consent agreement laying out terms for fixing the government's finances.

It replaces a controversial law repealed by Michigan voters on November 6 that made it easier for the state to intervene in fiscally troubled cities and schools and gave state-appointed emergency managers running the governments the power to suspend collective bargaining agreements with workers.

That law, known as Public Act 4, was suspended in August pending the outcome of the vote and the state has been relying on a former, weaker law since then.

Snyder, a Republican, defended the new law against criticism that it is too similar to Public Act 4.

"This legislation demonstrates that we clearly heard, recognized and respected the will of the voters," the governor said in a statement. "It builds in local control and options while also ensuring the tools to protect communities and schools districts' residents, students and taxpayers."

The law also includes appropriations for administrative expenses, making it ineligible for a petition drive that could result in its repeal by voters.

Because the new law will not take effect for 90 days, it will have no immediate impact on eight cities and school districts currently operating with emergency financial managers and three cities, including Detroit, which are operating under consent agreements.

Even after it kicks in, the law keeps in place existing state-appointed managers and any ongoing review process to determine if a manager is needed, which is the case in Detroit.

Snyder on December 18 named a review team for Michigan's largest city, a step in a process that could lead Detroit to file what would be the biggest-ever municipal bankruptcy.

That team met twice last week and is on an expedited schedule to report to the governor, Caleb Buhs, a spokesman for the Michigan Treasury Department, said on Wednesday.

Detroit was able to avoid the appointment of an emergency manager by entering into the consent agreement earlier this year that gave the state more oversight of the city.

However, slow progress on reforms led state officials to launch a review process earlier this month that could lead to a state-appointed manager, who could decide to take the city to federal bankruptcy court unless the state blocks the move.

The Cheerio Family: Staying at Home - Joy's Story

I don?t mean to cheat but, I want to start this post with a little line from Deanna?s story. She wrote:

?God had known exactly what I needed in my life, when I didn't.?

This statement encapsulates my life story; from beginning to end, including, but not limited to my motherhood. I have had so many dreams in my lifetime, mostly shallow dreams of self-fulfillment, popularity, travel, new and exciting experiences, changing the world. Dreams of big things.

God knew all along that what I really needed was something small; small, but significant.

I am thankful to say that I grew up in a family that taught me to value motherhood as a worthy calling. My mother and older sisters were and are stay-at-home moms. I always knew that I wanted my life to include marriage and children, but I didn?t know that this life would be the fulfillment of my soul. I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the One who knows the deepest needs and desires of our hearts and can fill them, no matter what our stage or station in life ?single or married, a parent or childless. I?m thankful that His plan for me, so far includes three people, one big and two little, who He has used to fulfill my heart. Deep peace is mine because of the work He has done in my life. Yes, there are ups and downs, of course; mistakes in abundance. He uses this little life to show me the depths of my heart and sanctify me. Often I don?t like to look at the darkness that lies down there in the depths, but He shows me to help me grow, to enable me to glorify Him. And that deep peace lingers because He has lead me to the place where I belong.

My life is now full of little things. From those teeny-tiny newborn diapers to the happiness that a two-year-old can receive from an ice cube or an acorn, I live a little life. My children have opened up my eyes to the beauty of small things. My travel circuit has been condensed too. On any given day I?m not likely to travel much further than a block or two down the road, usually pushing a double stroller or holding little hands. I am so thankful for this little life. My revolves around cooking little meals and wiping little hands. Cleaning little messes, telling little stories, folding little clothes, writing little notes. As far as fame goes, will I gain worldly recognition for collecting chestnuts or pushing swings? Will I win any awards for wiping noses, kissing owies or trying to prevent another tantrum? Probably not, at least not on earth, but I hope to be found faithful. I thank the Lord for this little, predictably unpredictable life full of small things that teach me about His goodness.

I will conclude with yet another quote from Charles Spurgeon which I read on this blog recently:

?To a man (or woman) who lives unto God nothing is secular, everything is sacred...

To draw a hard and fast line and say, ?This is sacred and this is secular,? is, to my mind, diametrically opposed to the teaching of Christ and the spirit of the gospel?

Peter saw a sheet let down from heaven in which were all manner of beasts and four-footed creatures, which he was bidden to kill and eat, and when he refused because they were unclean, he was rebuked by a voice from heaven, saying, ?What God hath cleansed that call not thou common? [Acts 10:15; 11:9].

The Lord hath cleansed your houses, he has cleansed your bed chambers, your tables? ?He has made the common pots and pans of your kitchens to be as the bowls before the altar ?

if you know what you are and live according to your high calling.

You housemaids, you cooks, you nurses, you ploughmen, you housewives, you traders, you sailors, your labor is holy if you serve the Lord Christ in it, by living unto Him as you ought to live.

The sacred has absorbed the secular.?

Rockmelt social browser comes to iPhone, Android version still in development

When we heard Rockmelt was going to announce some news about its social browser becoming available to lots more people, we assumed that meant the Android version was finally ready. Not quite: turns out the company was just referring to iPhone users. Indeed, the startup just announced an iPhone version of its news aggregator, which should go nicely with the iPad app that launched back in October. Like the iPad version, it presents articles as endlessly scrollable tiles, not unlike the way your Facebook timeline is laid out. Similar to Facebook, too, you can use so-called emoticodes to like things or indicate other profound human responses, such as "hmm" or "WTF?" Other than that, there's not much to it: swipe left to close out of a story; swipe right to save it as a bookmark. It's available for free in the App Store now; no ETA on that Android version, but we're told the company is actively toiling away on it.

Lizard tails detach at a biological 'dotted line'

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Like sheets of paper marked with perforated lines, gecko tails have unique structural marks that help them sever their tails to make a quick getaway. Though voluntarily shedding a body part in this manner is a well-known phenomenon, research published December 19 in the open access journal PLOS ONE reveals aspects of the process that may have applications for structural engineers making similar, quickly detachable structures.

Jan Enghild and colleagues from Aarhus University, Denmark, used advanced bio-imaging techniques to discover that a Tokay gecko sheds its tail along pre-formed "score lines" in specific regions of the tail, which is held together by adhesive forces at these lines.

The process of separation is independent of protein-cleaving enzymes, and microstructures at the ends of muscle fibers are most likely involved in the release of the tail. Enghild adds, "Our work has been driven by a curiosity to understand how tail autotomy is facilitated among lizards. In the present work we use a combination of advanced protein- and high-resolution imaging- techniques to address the mechanism involved in the process."

Boeheim wins 900th; No. 3 Syracuse 72, Detroit 68

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Jim Boeheim called it just another number. The message board in the Carrier Dome didn't agree.

Moments after his third-ranked Syracuse Orange held off Detroit for a 72-68 victory Monday night in the Gotham Classic, making Boeheim just the third Division I men's coach to reach 900 wins, Hall of Famer Dave Bing, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Louisville's Rick Pitino offered congratulations on the big screens inside the Teflon dome as the hometown faithful cheered.

Boeheim, 68 and in his 37th year at his alma mater, is 900-304 and joined an elite fraternity. Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) are the only other men's Division I coaches to win that many games.

"To me, it's just a number," said Boeheim, whose first victory was against Harvard in 1976. "If I get 900, have I got to get more? That's why maybe it's just not that important to me because to me it's just a number, and the only number that matters is how this team does."

So far, it's done OK.

James Southerland had 22 points for Syracuse (10-0), which increased its home winning streak to 30 games, longest in the nation. Detroit (6-5), which lost 77-74 at St. John's in the second game of the season and 74-61 at Pitt earlier this month, had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Bing, Boeheim's college roommate, teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, and Roosevelt Bouie, a star on Boeheim's first team in 1976-77, were in the Carrier Dome crowd of 17,902.

Bing was standing tall in the locker room after the game.

"Nobody would have thought when we came here 50 years ago that either one of us would have had the kind of success we've had," said Bing, today the mayor of Detroit. "I'm so pleased and proud of him because he stuck with it. He's proven that he's one of the best coaches ever in college basketball, and he'll be No. 2 shortly."

After a victory that nearly was short-circuited, Boeheim was presented a jersey encased in glass with 900 emblazoned on it.

"I'm happy. I've stayed around long enough. I was a little nervous," Boeheim said at center court. "I'm proud to be here. To win this game is more pressure than I've felt in a long time. I wasn't thinking about losing until the end. That wouldn't have been a good thing to happen, but it very well could have."

Indeed.

Midway through the second half with Syracuse dominating, fans were given placards featuring cardboard cutouts of Boeheim's face with 900 wins printed on the back to wave in celebration. But when the public address announcer in the Carrier Dome invited fans to stick around for the postgame ceremony, the Titans roared back.

Juwan Howard Jr., who finished with 18 points, scored 14 over the last 6 minutes to key a 16-0 run, his two free throws pulling Detroit within 67-63 with 55.1 seconds left after the Titans had trailed by 20 with 6:09 to play.

"You know what, I didn't hear it, but the players probably heard because they sure came alive," Detroit coach Ray McCallum said. "This is a big stage. Guys sitting around the hotel watching television getting ready to play the No. 3 team in the country and they're talking about going for 900 wins, coach Boeheim. That's a lot for a young man to digest."

Michael Carter-Williams hit three of four free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.

"Michael made big-time free throws you've got to make. If he misses a couple, it's a new game. That was the difference," Boeheim said. "We have not been in that situation. Hopefully, we'll learn from that."

Carter-Williams finished with 10 assists and 12 points, his sixth straight double-double.

"It was great to be part of this," Carter-Williams said. "It's a part of history."

Doug Anderson scored 18 points and Nick Minnerath had 13 for Detroit. Ray McCallum Jr., the coach's son and Detroit's leading scorer at 19.4 points per game, finished with nine, while Jason Calliste had seven.

Southerland scored a career-high 35 points, matching a school record with nine 3-pointers, in a win at Arkansas in late November and, after an 0-for-10 slump over three games, found his range again Saturday night with three 3s in a win over Canisius. He finished 5 of 8 from behind the arc against the Titans.

One of the keys to breaking Syracuse's 2-3 zone is hitting the long ball, and Detroit struck out in the first half. The Titans were 0 for 10 and the lone 3 they did make ? by McCallum with just over 6 minutes left ? was negated by a shot-clock violation.

Detroit could only lament what might have been if a couple had gone in.

"We never gave up. That's a tribute to our team," Howard said. "We had the right attitude. We played a tough opponent. You usually don't want a moral victory, but we can take some positives from this game."

Syracuse plays again Saturday against Temple in Madison Square Garden, and the Orange faithful are likely to be out in numbers as they usually are when the team plays there.

Boeheim was effusive in praise of the support the team has received during his long tenure. Syracuse has had 71 crowds of over 30,000 since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980 and holds the NCAA on-campus record of 34,616, set nearly three years ago against Villanova.

"The support of fans cannot be overestimated," he said. "You have to have that kind of support in your building to bring recruits in, to help you play better. We've had a tremendous loyal fan base. That's why I always felt this was a great place to coach and why I never really thought about going anywhere else. The support from the fans is the No. 1 thing you have to have."

'Jersey Shore' Stars' Homes: Their Living ... - AOL Real Estate

The "Jersey Shore" series finale airs Thursday night, and after that it's bye-bye Shore house. We have to say, we're gonna miss that guido party palace: It's not only survived the housemates' hijinks, but it made it through Hurricane Sandy with hardly a scratch.

But once the "Shore" stars close the door on the beach house for good, what places will they call home? (By the way, scroll to the bottom to see what the Shore house looks like now that the cast has moved out!)

'Snooki' Polizzi homeNicole 'Snooki' Polizzi

Snooks may call herself the "princess of Poughkeepsie," but she actually hails from Marlboro, N.Y., where she lives with her dad -- and her family home (pictured at left) isn't a princess palace. According to Zillow, the home is a modest 1,472-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom spread, arguably rather small for such a big (and annoying) personality as Snooki's. But we're hearing that, with new baby Lorenzo in the mix, Snooki and her fiance, Jionni Lavalle, are staying at Lavalle's family home in New Jersey.

Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Sammi 'Sweeetheart' Giancola

The on-again, off-again couple of the Shore house sure had their explosive fights (where they ripped the house to shreds), but it seems that they'll have their own home to destroy in future disagreements. The couple reportedly bought a home in the New York City area, which may even be the setting of a future reality show. Of course, the interior decorating may be their first (or 1,000th) conflict. Sammi describes her style as "unique," but Ronnie told gossip website Hollywood Life: "Yeah, I'm not going to have animal print in my house!"

Pauly D family homePauly D

Pauly's DJ career has shot through the roof since "Jersey Shore" began, so no one really knows why he's still living at home with his mom in Johnston, R.I. But we can see why: It's a pretty cute house (pictured at right). According to Zillow, Pauly's family home is a sizable 2,838-square-foot, three-story dwelling. You might have even seen this YouTube video of Pauly fans running into him outside the house. (The camera is a little unsteady, but you can definitely make out the address behind Pauly.) Of course, it's not that Pauly spends too much time there: He was jet-setting between Rhode Island and Las Vegas in his spinoff show -- and his Vegas pad was way more luxurious.

Jenni 'JWOWW' Farley homeJenni 'JWOWW' Farley

Jenni owns a home in Toms River, N.J., with boyfriend Roger Mathews, but they've seen their share of hard times recently. Hurricane Sandy did considerable damage to their home, and Mathews tweeted a pic (at left) of all the cabinetry and flooring that they had to rip out after water damage. But Jenni told Jay Leno recently that she believed the house was fixable and that they were able to re-enter their home shortly after the storm. Of course, Jenni had another hideout in Manchester, N.J., a couple of months ago: the home where she and Snooki were filming the second season of "Snooki and JWOWW."

Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino

Though Mike says he's from Staten Island, N.Y., his mother lives in Manalapan, N.J. But we can't be too sure where he calls home now. His Facebook page cites Freehold, N.J., as the location of his talent agency, and public records show a Michael Sorrentino with a home address in Freehold. But Mike also reportedly has a condo in Miami.

Vinny Guadagnino homeVinny Guadagnino

Vinny has lived at home with his mom in Staten Island for quite some time, and his family home (pictured at right) is the place that he retreated to when he briefly left the Shore house in season five, complaining of anxiety attacks. It's a nice-size place with 2,548 square feet, according to Zillow. The real estate site doesn't indicate how many bedrooms and bathrooms the home has, but it's valued at more than half a million dollars. But reports have said that Vinny will be moving his family to another home on Staten Island -- the place where his new MTV talk/reality show (which is still in the works) will be filmed.

Deena Cortese

Deena lives with her parents in New Egypt, N.J. -- and that's about all we can tell you. We don't have a clue where her house is. (If we did, we'd be stalking her right now.) Sorry.

Air Berlin sells bulk of frequent flyer program

(AP) ? Lossmaking German carrier Air Berlin says it has sold a majority stake in its frequent flyer program to Abu Dhabi-based Etihad.

Air Berlin said Tuesday that it expects to receive ?184.4 million ($242.7 million) from the sale of 70 percent of the program.

Etihad already owns a 30 percent stake in Germany's second biggest airline, which has been struggling in Europe's highly competitive travel market.

Air Berlin reported a loss of ?271.8 million for 2011, up from ?97.2 million the previous year.

The sale of its frequent flyer program is part of the oneworld alliance member's cost-saving drive. Others in the oneworld alliance include British Airways and American Airlines.

Justice Department, Penguin Reach Settlement on E-Book Pricing ...

The Justice Department said today it had reached a settlement with Penguin Group (USA), one of six companies it had accused of conspiring to raise prices of e-books. The agreement, if approved by the court, would leave only two companies ? Apple and Macmillan ? facing the lawsuit, due to go to trial in June. Settlements were reached earlier with Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster.

Football - A Reflection of Society,Politics and Peoples - Political World

Years ago I read a great book called "How Football Explains the World"

At the current moment in time football is a good reflection on the state of mind of certain people and their politics and their overall view on society. The idea for the thread came from the Zenit St Petersburg and their recent calls from their fans that the team only play hetrosexual and black players (the club has rejected such calls) but this is a reflection on the state of thinking by the fans. A lot of the Zenit fans are members of fan groups that are known to have strong right wing nationalistic views that fall in line with nationalist thinking that are prevalent at the moment. The calls for white hetro players is a reflection on that. Contrast that with say left teams that are in Europe such as AEK Athens, Olympique Marsaille, Livorno and the one we are all familiar with , Celic.

Celtic is the most famous one we are familiar with. Their Irish heritage etc. Is there any other teams at the moment that people think are an accurate refelction on society ina particular state of the world?

(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez's elder brother reportedly was heading to Cuba on Tuesday to visit the Venezuelan leader amid uncertainty and concern at home over his condition after a fourth cancer-related surgery.

The government newspaper Correo del Orinoco said Adan Chavez planned to leave in the afternoon. It also said that the president's father, Hugo de los Reyes Chavez, had plans to travel to Havana and that Chavez's mother might go with him, though that had not been confirmed.

Against the backdrop of Chavez's illness, many Venezuelans are talking about the possibility of a looming transition of power and a new presidential election. Before undergoing surgery, Chavez designated Vice President Nicolas Maduro as his chosen successor to take his place if necessary.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos expressed concern Tuesday about what might happen if a post-Chavez transition were to go badly. In a radio interview, he said a peaceful and problem-free change would have "no repercussion in the region."

"What would be terrible is if that transition weren't easy, were problematic," Santos said in an interview with Colombia's W Radio. "That would generate problems in the region. That's why I've said that Chavez is a factor of stability at this time."

Chavez's government has been appointed a facilitator in peace talks between Colombia's government and rebels, and Santos noted that he has had a good relationship with Venezuela's leftist leader despite their differences.

"I hope it stays that way, whether with Chavez or with his replacement," Santos said, adding that he had spoken with Maduro on various occasions.

Chavez hasn't spoken publicly since his Dec. 11 surgery for an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer. It was his fourth cancer-related operation since June 2011.

Government officials say the president's four children and a son-in-law have been with him in Havana since the operation. The government has said Chavez suffered complications during the operation but has been recovering.

Santos said he didn't have specific information about Chavez's condition.

"I know that it's complicated," Santos said in the interview. "He wouldn't have said goodbye in that way if he didn't have complications, but today I don't know his exact state of health, and nobody does."

"We've discussed this with other presidents, and the truth is they aren't very informed about exactly what state of health he is in today," Santos added.

The leaders of Bolivia and Uruguay have both expressed interest in traveling to Havana to visit Chavez, though so far neither has made the trip.

In Brazil, Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota said that government officials were monitoring reports of Chavez's health and that the latest news indicated "stabilization and even positive developments" in his condition, state-run news agency Agencia Brasil reported.

Adan Chavez, who is the eldest of six brothers in the president's family, was re-elected governor in the president's home state of Barinas over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the governor said the relatively low 53 percent turnout in the nationwide elections was a problem that affected candidates in both camps. He added that some who voted for the president's re-election in October had apparently voted for the opposition this time.

"Some seem to have had the nerve to have voted for opposition candidates. That, of course, is a big contradiction," he said in a televised speech. "It shows an ideological weakness that we have to continue working on."

Chavez, 58, is scheduled to be sworn in for a new six-year term Jan. 10. Under Venezuela's constitution, if the president dies, is incapacitated or steps down, a new election would be held within 30 days.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello declined to speculate when asked at a news conference whether Chavez will be back in Venezuela by Jan. 10.

"There's a date established in the constitution, and our concern really is that the president recovers and is totally healthy, and, God willing, he will be," Cabello said.

Sandy Hook school shooting: Few easy answers for a violent culture (+video)

Adam Lanza, a troubled 'genius,' reportedly shot and killed 20 elementary school pupils and seven adults, including his mother, before killing himself in Newtown, Conn., on Friday. The national tragedy has sparked a search for ways to stop a senseless streak of mass killings.

New details in the Newtown, Conn., school massacre suggest that the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, may have suffered from autism or a personality disorder and also had easy access to high-powered weapons ? a combination of unique circumstances that may complicate President Obama's call for broad "meaningful action" in the wake of a national tragedy.

The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday pose many difficult questions about American views toward mental health problems among disaffected young men as well as possible impacts of a violent media and gun culture.

But the tragic events, experts say, also offer a unique opportunity for America to reassess its values and culture without getting bogged down by politics ? a development that could yield possible solutions to a streak of mass shootings this year that have ended with a total of 65 Americans ? including, now, 20 school children ? losing their lives in swirls of high-powered gun fire, primarily with young, intelligent and disinhibited men behind the triggers.

"Clearly, this is a young man who was very, very angry and willing to express his anger in almost unthinkable ways," says James Cassidy, a criminal justice professor at the University of New Haven. "But I think we do also have to look at ourselves here. Yes, it's unclear ? what factors were the most prevalent, but certainly the fact that we have a mental health system that is failing right now plays a role. We're also coming to understand that while violence on TV, in movies and in lyrics haven't led to more crime, it does appear that a certain faction of society is vulnerable to such violence, that it disinhibits them in some way."

The Monitor's View:?Newtown shootings: What to say to ourselves

Police say Mr. Lanza, a former honor roll student known to carry a black briefcase to class, killed his mother and then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he forced his way into the school.

Once inside, he killed 20 children, six adults, and finally himself in a hail of rapid gun fire that took place, police say, in two separate areas of the school, including a classroom. The three guns found by police ? two semiautomatic pistols, a Glock and a Sig Sauer and an assault-style Bushmaster rifle ? were registered to Lanza's mother.

Coming 10 days before Christmas and becoming the seventh major mass shooting of the year, the coldblooded and senseless brutality of the Sandy Hook massacre shook Americans to their core. President Obama wiped away tears and had to collect himself as he addressed the nation Friday afternoon, saying Americans have to take "meaningful action" to thwart such senseless violence.

It won't be an easy task, given the country's fiscal situation and reticence to tinker with hard-fought gun rights.

Bottom line: It's difficult to "figure [mass shootings] out and try to predict [them] without trampling on the Constitution and certain inalienable rights guaranteed when this country was developed," says Scott Belshaw, a criminal justice professor at the University of North Texas, in Denton.

To be sure, gun control advocates, having largely lost the legal arguments in the wake of major court decisions affirming Second Amendment rights to own and carry guns for self-defense, are now primed to push forward new gun control legislation. Since the sun-setting of the assault weapons ban in 2004, Congress has shored up state reporting of gun purchases, but has not passed any major gun control law.

Sony 16-50mm retractable zoom lens to ship in February for $349

Sony 1650mm retractable zoom lens to ship in February for $349

Sony NEX-6 kit owners have been shooting with it for weeks, but the company's 16-50mm retractable zoom lens isn't quite yet available as a standalone purchase. That's set to change early next year -- reps have told us that the lens should hit stores by mid-February, while the optic's own product page now lists an estimated ship date of February 3rd. The lens, which ships with the NEX-6 for a $150 premium (compared to the $850 body-only price), delivers a focal range similar to that of Sony's larger 18-55mm optic, matching that version's f/3.5-5.6 aperture as well. It's compatible with E-mount cameras, including select Handycam camcorders and discontinued models like the NEX-C3. It was also slated to ship as part of an NEX-5R kit for $800, but the company has scrapped plans for that particular package. For now, you can hit up Sony's site at the source link below to hop on the pre-order list.
