Could asteroid dust counter climate change?

To combat global warming, scientists in Scotland now suggest an out-of-this-world solution ? a giant dust cloud in space, blasted off an asteroid, which would act like a sunshade for Earth.

The world is warming and the climate is changing. Although many want to prevent these shifts by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun, some controversially suggest deliberating manipulating the planet's climate with large-scale engineering projects, commonly called geoengineering.

Instead of altering the climate by targeting either the oceans or the atmosphere, some researchers have suggested geoengineering projects that would affect the entire planet from space. For instance, projects that reduced the amount of solar radiation Earth receives by 1.7 percent could offset the effects of a global increase in temperature of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius).

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has noted that climate models suggest average global temperatures will rise by 2 to 11.5 degrees F (1.1 to 6.4 degrees C) by the end of this century.

"A 1.7 percent reduction is very small and will hardly be noticeable on Earth," said researcher Russell Bewick, a space scientist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. "People sometimes get the idea of giant screens blocking the entire sun. This is not the case ... as [the device] is constantly between the sun and the earth, it acts merely as a very light shade or filter."

Shading Earth
One proposal to shade Earth from the sun would place giant mirrors in space. The main problem with this concept is the immense cost and effort needed either to build and launch such reflectors or to construct them in outer space ? the current cost to launch an object into low Earth orbit runs into thousands of dollars per pound. Another would use blankets of dust to blot out the sun, just as clouds do for Earth. These offer the virtue of simplicity compared with mirrors, but run the risk of getting dispersed over time by solar radiation and the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and planets. [Top 10 Craziest Environmental Ideas]

Now, instead of having a dust cloud floating by itself in space, researchers suggest that an asteroid could essentially gravitationally anchor a dust cloud in space to block sunlight and cool the planet.

"I would like to make it clear that I would never suggest geoengineering in place of reducing our carbon emissions," Bewick told LiveScience. Instead, he said, "We can buy time to find a lasting solution to combat Earth?s climate change. The dust cloud is not a permanent cure, but it could offset the effects of climate change for a given time to allow slow-acting measures like carbon capture to take effect."

Flash graphic: Ideas for a cooler planet

The idea would be to place an asteroid at Lagrange point L1, a site where the gravitational pull of the sun and the Earth balance each other to keep an object in a relatively stable orbit. This point is about four times the distance from Earth to the moon.

The researchers suggest outfitting a near-Earth asteroid with a "mass driver," a device consisting of electromagnets that would hurl asteroid-derived matter away from the giant rock. The mass driver could serve both as a rocket to push the asteroid to the L1 point and as an engine to spew out sun-shielding dust. [5 Reasons to Care About Asteroids]

The researchers calculate that the largest near-Earth asteroid, 1036 Ganymed, could maintain a dust cloud large enough to block out 6.58 percent of the solar radiation that would normally reach Earth, more than enough to combat any current global warming trends. Such a cloud would be about 11 quadrillion pounds (5 quadrillion kilograms) in mass and about 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometers) wide.

Ganymed has a mass of about 286 quadrillion pounds (130 quadrillion kilograms). An asteroid of this size might make one think of disaster movies, such as "Armageddon"; however, "rather than destroying the Earth, it could be used to help mankind," Bewick said.

Asteroid dust challenges
The main challenge of this proposal would be pushing an asteroid the size of Ganymed to the sun-Earth L1 point.

"The company Planetary Resources recently announced their intention to mine asteroids," Bewick said. "The study that they base their plans on reckons that it will be possible to capture an asteroid with a mass of 500,000 kilograms (1.1 million pounds) by 2025. Comparing this to the mass of Ganymed makes the task of capturing it seem unfeasible, at least in everything except the very far term. However, smaller asteroids could be moved and clustered at the first Lagrange point."

Safety is another concern.

"A very large asteroid is a potential threat to Earth, and therefore great care and testing would be required in the implementation of this scenario," Bewick said. "Due to this, the political challenges would probably match the scale of the engineering challenge. Even for the capture of much smaller asteroids, there will likely be reservations from all areas of society, though the risks would be much less."

Also, there's no way to fully test this dust cloud on a large scale to verify its effectiveness before implementing it, "something that is common to all geoengineering schemes," Bewick said. "On the global scale, it is not possible to test because the test would essentially be the real thing, except probably in a diluted form. Climate modeling can be performed, but without some large-scale testing, the results from these models cannot be fully verified."

Still, if geoengineers did use asteroids to generate clouds, they could drastically reduce how much dust the projects spew out "should any catastrophic climate response be observed," Bewick said, "with the cloud dispersing naturally over time."

The scientists will detail their findings in the Nov. 12 issue of the journal Advances in Space Research.

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Europe sure didn't look like a team trailing by four points in the Ryder Cup.

Under a darkening sky, there was still enough light to see the whites of Ian Poulter's bulging eyes and his golf ball disappear into the cup for a fifth straight birdie ? and another crucial point Saturday. There was no mistaking the smile of captain Jose Maria Olazabal, who waited from sunrise to sunset at Medinah for hope that this cup was still within reach.

Right when it looked like the Americans were a lock to win it back, Poulter came through with a performance so remarkable that it was the only match Europe won when it trailed on the back nine. Right before him, Luke Donald matched a clutch shot by Tiger Woods with one that was even better and it kept Woods winless for the first time going into Sunday singles.

Those two matches gave Europe a load of momentum going into the final day, even if all it really changed was the size of the deficit.

The Americans still had a big lead, 10-6. Europe at least had hope.

The endless chants of "USA! USA!" gave way at the end to snappy serenades of "Ole, Ole, Ole" as both sides trudged to their team rooms in darkness, the Europeans in their berry-colored sweaters walking a little taller.

"We're excited about our position," U.S. captain Davis Love III said. "But we know it's not over yet."

That's what Ben Crenshaw said in 1999 at Brookline when the Americans trailed by the same score, and then delivered the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history. That's what Europe faces now.

The message Olazabal had for his team Saturday night was simple.

"Let's go out there and play your socks off."

Olazabal remembers that American comeback as well as anyone. He was warming up on the range when the Americans sent their best players out early and won the first six matches. He was in the decisive match against Justin Leonard, who holed a 45-foot putt on the 17th hole. And he was in the team room in tears with the rest of the Europeans.

Is the Spaniard a big believer in fate?

"I believe momentum will come our way," Olazabal said. "Why not tomorrow?"

Olazabal borrowed a page from that '99 Ryder Cup by loading the top of his singles lineup with his best players. Luke Donald leads off against Bubba Watson, followed by Poulter against Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy against Keegan Bradley and Justin Rose against Phil Mickelson.

Love put Woods in the anchor positions against Francesco Molinari, whom Woods beat in Wales two years ago.

The European strategy was no surprise. Love was at Brookline, too. He realized Europe had no other choice. And he was not the least bit worried that his team would look ahead to winning, or turn tight and play not to lose.

"Even if they were in primary school, they know about 1999, and they know the story," Love said. "They know Ben Crenshaw. They know Justin Leonard. They know what can happen. And they're going to be having the same kind of team meeting we had in '99. 'All right, boys, we've got to win the first six.' And then the game is one."

The final two matches Saturday were a showcase of what the Ryder Cup is all about ? one brilliant shot after another, birdies on every hole, suspense at every turn.

Donald and Sergio Garcia were on the verge of blowing a 4-up lead to hard-charging Woods and Steve Stricker, hanging on when Donald matched two birdies with Woods, including a tee shot into the 17th that plopped down 2 feet from the cup.

Woods, who made five birdies on the back nine for the second straight day without a point to show for it, was thinking more of the big picture.

"Being up four is nice," he said. "We are in a great spot right now to win the cup."

Poulter and McIlroy were 2 down with six holes to play against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson when McIlroy made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th, and Poulter took it from there.

"We had to make birdies, and wow! Five in a row. It was awesome," Poulter said. "I've got the world No. 1 at my side, backing me up. It allowed me to hit some golf shots."

The crowd was still buzzing as it filed out of Medinah, and Poulter grinned.

"It's pretty fun, this Ryder Cup," said Poulter, who raised his career record to 11-3-0.

It's been plenty fun for the Americans, who for the first time have not lost any of the four sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the current format in 1979. Mickelson and Bradley were flawless in foursomes, matching a Ryder Cup record for largest margin with a 7-and-6 win over Donald and Lee Westwood.

Mickelson and Bradley have been so dominant that they have yet to play the 18th hole in any of their three matches. Bradley became the first rookie since Garcia in 1999 to win his first three matches.

They didn't play in the afternoon, part of the master plan by U.S. captain Davis Love III to make sure his players were fresh for Sunday. Love became the first U.S. captain since 1979 to make sure each of his players sat out at least one match before the final day.

Now, he finds out if it will work.

"We're not disappointed," Love said of the late rally by Europe. "We haven't lost a segment yet, and we're just going to try to keep that string going."

Despite the last two matches that swung momentum away from them, the Americans only have to look at their 10-6 lead ? their largest since it was 10?-5? in 1981 ? to realize how close they are to winning back that 17-inch gold trophy. They only need 14? points to win. That translates to four wins and a halve in the 12 singles matches, traditionally an American strength.

And they have built this lead without getting a single point from Woods, who has lost his last five matches with Stricker in two Ryder Cups and a Presidents Cup.

"I've played well the last two afternoons and didn't get a point," Woods said. "It's tough. Yesterday I made a bunch of birdies and today I made five on the back nine and it just wasn't enough."

His team has carried him along, though.

Watson and Simpson rolled to a 5-and-4 win in the afternoon, while Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar won for the second straight time in fourballs in a tight match. It was tied going to the par-3 17th, a daunting shot from an elevated tee to a narrow green guarded by water. Johnson hit 8-iron to 20 feet and poured in the birdie putt, setting off the loudest cheer of a raucous week outside Chicago. They halved the 18th for a 1-up win.

"Probably the loudest roar I've ever heard," Johnson said. "In that situation, probably one of the best putts I've ever made."

The Americans had a 5-3 lead to start the day, and it was critical for the Europeans to make inroads. Instead, they saw more American red on the scoreboards and heard endless cheers erupt from all corners of Medinah.

Leading the way was Bradley, the rock star of this Ryder Cup who was so fired up that he came out to the first tee well before his match to ask for noise. In alternate shot, the most difficult format, Bradley and Mickelson had six birdies in 10 holes, and their 7-and-6 win tied the Ryder Cup record last matched in 1991.

Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker atoned for a Friday loss by beating McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in 18 holes, and the Americans took an 8-4 lead to the afternoon. All the momentum was on their side. The crowd felt it, and so did the players from both teams.

"It was hard ? very hard ? to ignore the red on the board," McDowell said. "It's hard to ignore the noise that's been made around the golf course. There's blood in the water. They're up for it."

That's what made those last two matches so critical.

Woods did not play Saturday morning, the first time he's ever been at the Ryder Cup in uniform without a tee time, and he didn't contribute much in falling so far behind. But he turned it around on the back nine, pointing to the cup when a birdie putt fell, screaming orders at his tee shot as the ball was in the air, looking like he was on the verge of a big comeback. Donald and Garcia, who had yet to win a point, made sure that didn't happen.

"That was big," Donald said. "Having these matches turn our way has really given the European side a lift that we needed. It's given us a heartbeat for tomorrow."

Poulter and McIlroy came up big in so many ways. The Americans had won every match at Medinah when leading on the back nine until the final match. McIlroy made his sliding birdie putt from 15 feet on the 13th hole, and Poulter did the rest.

"Poults gets that look in his eye ? especially the week of the Ryder Cup ? and it's really impressive," McIlroy said.

The Europeans now hope to repeat the American comeback in 1999. The Americans had Ben Crenshaw, wagging his finger and saying, "I'm a big believer in fate." The Europeans have Olazabal, a proud Spaniard and teammate of the late Seve Ballesteros. This is the first Ryder Cup since his death from a brain tumor in May 2011, and the Europeans will dress in navy blue, the color Ballesteros favored on Sunday. Their uniforms will bear his iconic silhouette.

"It's always possible," Paul Lawrie said. "Until it's impossible to do it, then you fight on, certainly for Jos? Mar?a this week. No one is going to be giving up."

European Union Wind Power Capacity Reaches 100 GW!

?
The European Union?s installed wind power capacity has reached a milestone ? the 100 gigawatt (GW) mark. That?s the equivalent of the electricity generated by 39 nuclear power plants, or ?a train of coal stretching from Buenos Aires to Brussels.? There are financial risks that are threatening this growth though, according to industry body EWEA.

20120929-112917.jpg

?We have just in the past couple of weeks passed 100 gigawatts of total installed capacity in Europe,? Christian Kjaer, CEO of the European Wind Energy Association is quoted as saying.

?We have been adding about 10 gigawatts per year for a couple of years and it will be around the same this year,? he added. ?Whether that will continue in 2013, I can?t say. There?s too much political uncertainty.?
?
The wind power industry is very capital-intensive, so after banks recently ?shortened the maturity of loans and increased costs for lenders,? it?s now facing challenges, Kjaer said, according to a Reuters news report.

In order to counter this, wind power companies are now looking for additional funding through ?long-term investors, including pension funds and insurers to make up the shortfall.?

And happening at the same time, the recent economic crisis in the European Union has been leading to significant changes in government policies to do with the funding of renewable energy.

20120929-112925.jpg
Recent growth in wind power in the EU this year includes 400 megawatts (MW) developed by DONG Energy off the coast of Denmark, and 48 MW developed by EDF Energies Nouvelles Polska in Poland, EWEA said.

So far, the majority for installed wind power has been onshore wind, but the rapidly emerging large-scale offshore wind sector can potentially double the current 100 gigawatts very fast,? once it solves its financing and grid issues.

Currently, the industry cost estimates for installing offshore are at least 2 times higher than onshore, ?3-4 million euros per megawatt, compared with around 1.2-1.4 million euros for onshore.?

In order to stimulate future investment, EWEA is pushing the European Commission and its member states to ?agree on a policy beyond the existing target of a 20 percent share of energy from renewable sources by 2020. It also wants to ensure major investment in the European grid, as part of a single energy market, in which supplies can easily cross national borders.?

A member of crew on a boat off the coast of West Africa has received medical treatment thanks to a call thousands of miles away in Dorset.

Portland Coastguard were contacted by the vessel?s Dorset-based skipper over the plight of a crew member.

The man, who had a mouth abscess, was working onboard the survey boat more than 3,000 miles away.

The coastguard linked the boat?s call to a doctor at the Queen Alexandra hospital, Portsmouth.

A spokesman said: ?He didn?t know who else to call.

?We linked the two telephone calls together and they were able to give advise.?

Steinbrueck to challenge Merkel in 2013

BERLIN (Reuters) - Peer Steinbrueck, an abrasive former finance minister, will lead the German Social Democrats' challenge to unseat chancellor Angela Merkel in a parliamentary election a year from now.

Announcing their "chancellor candidate" some months earlier than expected, the centre-left opposition took Germany by surprise on Friday; Steinbrueck, a combative veteran from the right of the SPD, marked out a campaign theme of tougher rules for banks and a goal of coalition government with the Greens.

Analysts saw his rapid emergence from a three-way struggle within his party as the outcome most threatening to Merkel, though polls show the conservative leader still well ahead.

Steinbrueck led Germany's response to the global economic crisis while serving as finance minister in Merkel's first government, a grand coalition from 2005-09. But the 65-year-old dismissed talk of forming another left-right pact, however the parties fare in a vote for the Bundestag due by October 2013.

"We want to oust this government. We want to make sure it isn't just partially replaced but completely replaced with an SPD-Greens government," he told a news conference, referring to the ecologist party currently ranked third in opinion polls.

The path was cleared for Steinbrueck's candidacy after two other SPD contenders, party chairman Sigmar Gabriel and former foreign minister Frank-Walker Steinmeier, stepped aside.

The election is no presidential style face-off but is fought by parties for parliamentary seats on the basis of proportional representation. However, the two traditional big parties set the tone for their campaigns according to their choice in advance of who will lead a government if they win a legislative majority.

Known for a quick wit and acerbic tongue, Steinbrueck is likely to mount much sharper attacks on Merkel than the more diplomatic Steinmeier and could also siphon away votes from her Christian Democrats (CDU) because of his centrist economic views and reputation as a safe pair of hands.

"Steinbrueck is definitely the most dangerous candidate because he appeals to the voters in the middle," said political scientist Gero Neugebauer at Berlin's Free University.

But a poll by Politbarometer released on Friday showed much higher personal support for Merkel. The 58-year-old chancellor, whose reputation has been much enhanced in the euro crisis, had a 53 percent approval rating versus Steinbrueck's 36 percent.

Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said the chancellor has "no preference for who runs against her" in the 2013 campaign.

A native of the rich northern port of Hamburg and once prime minister of Germany's most populous state, the western industrial powerhouse of North Rhine-Westphalia, Steinbrueck has never won a major election. He took over as state premier in mid-term. And, at the federal level, it was Steinmeier who was the SPD candidate against Merkel in 2009. He suffered a crushing defeat in which the SPD vote hit a postwar low of 23 percent.

The outspoken Steinbrueck has vowed that he will never again serve in a Merkel cabinet. He seems likely to resist a revival of the grand coalition, in which the SPD was junior partner - an experience which saw the party's popularity ravaged.

TAKING ON THE BANKS

Steinbrueck's launch this week of proposals for tough new restrictions on the banking sector have mollified some critics on the left wing of the SPD.

"Steinbrueck has taken a big step in our direction by being very bold in taking on the powerful and aggressive bank lobby," said Ernst Dieter Rossmann, a leader of the SPD left in the Bundestag lower house. "He's got our full support on that."

As Germany's oldest active party celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, it stands at around 26 percent in opinion polls compared with 38 percent for the Christian Democrats.

But the poor standing of Merkel's centre-right partners, the Free Democrats who are languishing at 4 percent, may force her to seek another coalition partner - possibly into an alliance with the SPD or, somewhat less likely, with the Greens.

The SPD insists its goal is to lead the next government with the Greens. Together they score about 43 percent in polls and would need about 47 percent of the vote to form a parliamentary majority. Parties with less than 5 percent get no seats at all.

Steinbrueck hopes to tap into public anger at banks' perceived recklessness and culpability for the financial crisis.

"This is not about destroying the financial system, rather it is about stabilizing it and preventing future excesses, and preventing any repeat of what we have seen in the past few years," he said when presenting his banking plan this week.

If Steinbrueck wins office he would seek a special bailout fund for banks, financed by banks themselves so that taxpayers no longer have to rescue the financial sector.

In proposals criticized by Deutsche Bank, he also wants to separate banks' retail and investment banking operations in order to safeguard household depositors' money.

The pro-euro SPD has supported Merkel's response to the euro zone crisis but Steinbrueck favors even deeper integration in Europe, such as common debt issuance in the currency bloc. This is firmly opposed by Merkel and unpopular with many Germans.

Steinbrueck, endorsed by both living former SPD chancellors - Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schroeder - is a straight talker with a record of verbal clashes, at home and abroad. The Swiss took exception to him likening them to "Indians" fleeing the cavalry during a row about tax havens. And current finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble responded to his heckling in parliament last year by telling him to "learn some manners".

A senior official who knows him well said: "Steinbrueck says what he thinks. Ninety percent of the time it's a strength.

"The other 10 percent it gets him in trouble."

It is unclear he will change his style to lead the campaign. An avid chess player, Steinbrueck once said of his style on the board: "I often play very impulsively."

Romney decries military cuts; Obama talking jobs

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) ? President Barack Obama pledged to create many more jobs and "make the middle class secure again" in a campaign-closing appeal on Thursday ? more than five weeks before Election Day ? to voters already casting ballots in large numbers.

Republican Mitt Romney, focusing on threats beyond American shores, accused the commander in chief of backing dangerous cuts in defense spending.

"The idea of cutting our military is unthinkable and devastating. And when I become president we will not," declared the challenger, struggling to reverse a slide in opinion polls.

Romney and Obama campaigned a few hundred miles apart in Virginia, 40 days before their long race ends. They'll be in much closer quarters next Wednesday in Denver ? for the first of three presidential debates on the campaign calendar and perhaps the challenger's best remaining chance to change the trajectory of the campaign.

In a race where the economy is the dominant issue, there was a fresh sign of national weakness as the Commerce Department lowered its earlier estimate of tepid growth last spring. Romney and his allies seized on the news as evidence that Obama's policies aren't working.

There was good news for the president in the form of a survey by The Washington Post and Kaiser Family Foundation suggesting he has gained ground among older voters after a month-long ad war over Republican plans for Medicare.

The pace also was quickening in the struggle for control of the U.S. Senate.

Prominent Republican conservatives pledged financial and political support for Rep. Todd Akin in Missouri. That complicated Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill's bid for re-election. But it also left Romney, running mate Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP hierarchy in an awkward position after they tried unsuccessfully to push Akin off the ballot in the wake of his controversial comments about rape.

Farther west, in Arizona, Republican Rep. Jeff Flake unleashed an ad calling Democratic rival Richard Carmona "Barack Obama's rubberstamp." It was not meant as a compliment in a state seemingly headed Romney's way, a response for sure to Democratic claims that the Senate contest was unexpectedly close.

In the presidential race, early voting has already begun in Virginia as well as South Dakota, Idaho and Vermont. It began during the day in Wyoming as well as in Iowa, like Virginia one of the most highly contested states. Early voters had formed a line a half block long in Des Moines before the elections office opened at 8 a.m.

Campaigning in Virginia Beach, Obama said, "It's time for a new economic patriotism, an economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class." It was a line straight from the two-minute television commercial his campaign released overnight.

He said that if re-elected he would back policies to create a million new manufacturing jobs, help businesses double exports and give tax breaks to companies that "invest in America, not ship jobs overseas." He pledged to cut oil imports in half while doubling the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks, make sure there are 100,000 new teachers trained in math and science, cut the growth of college tuition in half and expand student aid "so more Americans can afford it."

He also touted a "balanced plan to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion," but he included $1 trillion in reductions that already have taken place, and he took credit for saving half of the funds budgeted for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that no longer are needed.

Obama also said he would "ask the wealthy to pay a little more," a reference to the tax increase he favors on incomes over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. It is perhaps his most fundamental disagreement on policy with Romney, who wants to extend expiring tax cuts at all levels, including the highest.

Obama's campaign put out a second, scathing commercial during the day based on Romney's recorded comments from last May that 47 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes and feel they are victims entitled to government benefits. Romney added that as a candidate his job is not to worry about them.

In the ad, Romney's by-now well-known comments are heard as images scroll by of a white woman with two children in a rural setting, a black woman wearing workplace safety goggles, two older white men wearing Veterans of Foreign Wars hats; a Latino, and finally a white woman with safety goggles ? each of them meant to portray millions whom Romney described dismissively in the appearance before donors four months ago.

Romney countered with two new ads of his own, including one that appeared designed to minimize political fallout from the videotape.

"President Obama and I both care about poor and middle-class families," he says in a direct appeal to voters. "The difference is my policies will make things better for them. We shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. We should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good-paying job."

The second ad pointed to comments Obama made four years ago when he said he would support proposals to raise the cost of business for facilities than run on coal. "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them," the then-presidential candidate is seen saying.

The narrator adds: "Obama wages war on coal while we lose jobs to China, which is using more coal every day. Now your job is in danger."

Romney campaigned at an American Legion hall in Springfield, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C., accusing Obama of supporting cuts in the defense budget that would be detrimental to the nation's military readiness.

"The world is not a safe place. It remains dangerous," he said, referring to North Korea, Syria, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. "The idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating."

Appealing for support from his audience, he said, "You realize we have fewer ships in the Navy than any time since 1917. ... Our Air Force is older and smaller than any time since 1947, when it was formed. This is unacceptable. And the idea of shrinking our active duty personnel by 100,000 or 200,000 ? I want to add 100,000 to active duty personnel."

To have a strong military, he said, it's imperative to have a strong economy, yet he added that growth in China and Russia is stronger than in the United States. He predicted that under Obama, there would be no improvement.

"So two -- two very different paths. One is the path the president's proposed, which is the status quo. His is the path of -- well, he calls it 'forward.' I call it 'forewarned.' All right? All right?

The $1 trillion Romney mentioned in defense cuts had the support of Republicans and Democrats alike in Congress, although he says GOP lawmakers made a mistake in voting for the reductions and several now want to prevent them from taking effect.

Fly Fishing ? Some Funny Ideas About Fishing

A repetitive routine can be one of the most annoying things for anyone. There is a limited chance one can feel monotonous with options of so many recreational activities. There is no dearth of choices even on a small budget. With developing tours, fishing charters are not related to exploring only. Scuba diving, sports fishing and even commercial fishing are few things one can enjoy on these expeditions.

Imagine world class sport fishing in one of the most diverse and exotic locations in the world. As time passed by and I started setting away my priorities, I realized it was necessary that I needed a break too and that's when I decided to go on for sport fishing all by myself. I hardly knew anything about fishing as how to make bait and what specific angling season is required to catch a specific variety. For me it was more of an opportunistic getaway from a howling and bustling city life, an only adventure with which I could create my own world and have fun in it, something I take pleasure in doing. All I needed was my gears such as a rod a reel a hook and variety of baits and I am all set for the real adventure. A fishing tour is all one needs to incite a new vigor in everything you do. Striking flora and coral reefs it is just another world waiting to be explored with enchanting creatures.

For me now every vacation of mine comprises of a fishing tour where I book myself for an affordable and convenient fishing charter and set off on my adventure. No matter how much I go for it I can never feel satiate enough. My next venture is going to be ice fishing, let's see how I am lucky to get there. Can Google Map a Path Back to iOS?

Google is reported to be working on a standalone map app for iOS, about three months after Apple replaced the original Google map app in iOS with its own product, for iOS 6. The news comes as Apple is plagued by almost daily reports of problems with its own mapping app. Whether Apple will approve a standalone Google Maps app for inclusion in its iTunes App Store remains to be seen.

Black holes: Scientists measure the point of no return

Using imaging of the galaxy M87, astronomers have for the first time measured the closest stable orbit within which matter can circle a black hole. They found that this innermost orbit measures 750 times the distance from the Earth to the sun.?

A black hole has a boundary called an event horizon. Anything that falls within a?black hole's event horizon ? be it stars, gas, or even light ? can never escape.

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," Shep Doeleman, assistant director of the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, said in a statement Thursday (Sept. 27). "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you?re not coming back."

Although the event horizon is an imaginary line that's impossible to observe, astronomers have imaged the region around a giant black hole at the center of a distant galaxy, and measured, for the first time, the closest stable orbit in which matter can circle the black hole. The findings were reported today in the journal Science.

The supermassive black hole in question lies at the center of the galaxy M87, which is about 50 million light-years from our own Milky Way. This behemoth black hole contains the mass of 6 billion suns.

Using a new observatory called the Event Horizon Telescope, which links up radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California, astronomers measured that the innermost possible orbit for matter around the black hole is roughly 5.5 times the size of the black hole's event horizon.

This innermost orbit is about five times the size of the solar system, or 750 times the distance from Earth to the sun, Doeleman told SPACE.com. The distance between the Earth and the sun is nearly 93 million miles (150 million kilometers).

The observations allowed the researchers to confirm that this swirling mass around the black hole is the?source of the powerful jets?of light seen radiating from the galaxy. Many galaxies throughout the universe spot similar jets, thought to be produced by matter falling into their central black holes. Until now, no telescope has had the resolution power to verify the idea.

The?Event Horizon Telescope?is a new project that aims to link as many as 50 radio dishes around the world to work in concert to image the distant universe. Already, the observatory can see celestial objects with 2,000 times more detail than the Hubble Space Telescope.

Ex-Credit Suisse trader arrested in Britain

LONDON (AP) ? A former Credit Suisse executive wanted in the U.S. on fraud charges linked to distorting the value of mortgage securities during the financial crisis has been arrested in Britain, authorities said Thursday.

U.S. Federal prosecutors have alleged that Kareem Serageldin conspired with two of his employees to hide the deteriorating condition of the U.S. housing market in 2007 in order to keep the value of bonds based on subprime mortgages artificially high, thereby fattening their bonuses.

He was slated to receive more than $7 million in compensation in 2007 before the company learned about the alleged fraud and withheld $5.2 million of his pay. The fraud, which prosecutors described earlier this year as "a tale of greed run amok," was blamed as responsible for a portion of the $2.65 billion write-down Credit Suisse announced in March 2008.

Serageldin ? Credit Suisse's former managing director and global head of structured credit ? has been charged with conspiracy, falsifying books and records, and wire fraud in the U.S. The charges carry a potential penalty of 45 years in prison.

Two other Credit Suisse traders pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in cooperation deals with prosecutors in February. At the time, U.S. prosecutors urged Serageldin, an American citizen living in England, to return to the U.S. and answer the charges against him.

Scotland Yard confirmed that Serageldin, 39, was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Extradition proceedings against him will begin Thursday at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court.

The subprime mortgage crisis fueled the financial meltdown in the fall of 2008 that pushed the U.S. into the most severe recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

U.S. federal regulators have brought civil charges against several big Wall Street firms accused of misleading investors about securities linked to risky mortgages in the years leading up to the financial crisis. The biggest settlement of the Securities and Exchange Commission's charges was with Goldman Sachs in July 2010. The firm agreed to pay $550 million.

Most of the government's cases related to banks' handling of mortgage securities in the run-up to the financial crisis have been civil proceedings, not criminal. All the cases have involved complex investments called collateralized debt obligations, securities that are backed by pools of other assets, such as mortgages.

Baby shower? So 2010. Edgier moms-to-be have a baby gender reveal

Forget the baby shower. It's a ... "gender reveal!" For moms-to-be who want drama in their shower of baby gadgetry, gender reveal parties let everyone ? including Mom ? find out the sex of the baby together. "Huh?" asks our pregnant blogger.

Silly Mommy. How 2010 of you. Today, baby showers are the least of it.

RELATED: Top 5 bullying myths - What you don't know about bullying

Or so I learned the other week, lying on that super comfy ultrasound bed for one of the more interesting pre-natal checkups; the one that not only determines whether your baby-to-be has all his/her fingers and toes, but also what sex organs he/she happens to boast.?

?Do you want to know what you?re having?? the friendly ultrasound technician asked.

"Heck yeah," I answered.? My husband and I were expecting this question, and, not exactly the patient types, already knew our answer. (Check out our post from earlier this year about the stats on who ?finds out? and who doesn?t.)?

And then she asked: ?Do you want me to tell you now or write it down?? You know, for your gender reveal??

Huh??

(Actually, I thought she said ?gender unveil,? but that might have been an accent issue. We?re not from Massachusetts.)

Yes, the ?gender reveal,? she explained. It?s all the rage these days. You have a party where your family and friends are dragged once again to pay homage to the bump (OK, she just said ?come to celebrate?) and at the best dramatic moment, you open the envelop (or look in the cake, or lift a curtain, or whatever) and discover whether to paint the nursery pink or blue.

Seriously.

Husband and I exchanged looks.

?Really?? I asked.

It was all I could muster.

?I know, I know,? she said.

Like any professional researcher, when I got home I turned immediately to Google. Sure enough, authoritative mommy sites from WhatToExpect.com to BabyCenter.com to Pinterest have lists of Gender Reveal ideas and party tips. There are entire websites and books devoted to this.

?Expecting a new baby is a very exciting time for a couple,? writes www.genderreveal.net. ?One of the most thrilling parts of pregnancy is revealing the gender of your beautiful little bundle. Don?t announce it just by making a phone call to your family and friends. Make your baby gender reveal party a big, wonderful, landmark event in your life by holding a well-planned baby gender reveal party. Celebrate the arrival of the newest addition in your family with all your friends and loved ones.?

There are plenty of ideas out there for a rockin? Gender Reveal.? One is to give the secret envelop to the party?s cake maker, who then brings out either a pink or blue cake at just the right moment in the party.

There?s the balloon approach, where the Keeper-Of-The-Ultrasound-Envelope orders a huge box of either pink or blue balloons, to be opened by the parents-to-be in front of guests.

Syrian regime sends text message to rebels: 'Game over'

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian authorities sent text messages over cell phones nationwide Thursday with a message for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's regime: "Game over."

The messages signed by the Syrian Arab Army also urged the rebels to surrender their weapons and warned the countdown to evict foreign fighters has begun. The texts appear to be part of the regime's psychological battle against the rebels, but are highly unlikely to have any effect on fighters intent on toppling Assad.

Syrians say they began receiving the messages a day after rebels bombed a military command center in Damascus ? a major security breach of the heavily guarded capital that highlighted the regime's growing vulnerability in the face of a rebellion growing in confidence and capabilities.

People with cellular subscriptions received the messages while those with prepaid phones did not, residents in the Syrian capital said.

Syria's two cell phone providers are privately owned, and the government would presumably have to pay for the service. Government officials were not available for comment.

In August, Syrian army helicopters dropped leaflets warning rebels in Damascus to hand over their arms and seek amnesty.

Despite Wednesday's high-profile attack, the two sides have been locked in a stalemate after 18 months of conflict. Activists say the death toll since the uprising against Assad began in March last year has topped 30,000, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties reported in the past five months.

On Thursday, rebel fighters launched a new push to try to take control of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major strategic prize in a stalemated civil war, opposition activists said.

Heavy clashes erupted Thursday in more than a dozen locations in the city, Syria's largest with 3 million people, said Mohammed Saeed, a local activist. Government forces shelled several districts, he said, speaking via Skype.

Rebels also attacked a compound of Syria's political security department in the city, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group of activists.

Opposition fighters took control of several neighborhoods in the city two months ago. Since then, neither has been able to dislodge the other.

In Geneva on Thursday, the United Nations' refugee agency said the U.N. and its partners are launching a revised appeal for $487.9 million to help support Syrian refugees. It said 2,000 to 3,000 refugees are crossing into neighboring countries each day.

The UNHCR said 294,000 Syrian refugees are registered or awaiting registration in neighboring countries.

Earlier Thursday, Lebanese TV station Al-Manar broadcast footage showing Syrian government troops driving rebels from a building they had briefly occupied Wednesday after a double car bomb attack struck army headquarters in Damascus.

The attacks further demonstrated the rebels' ability to penetrate the tight security in the capital.

Al Manar's correspondent Youssef Shaeito said he accompanied Syrian troops on Wednesday as they stormed the compound after the explosions. In an interview with the station, he said he saw the bodies of three gunmen inside, suggesting clashes between government forces and rebels inside the building.

The station is owned by the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group, a strong ally of Assad's regime. Syrian state-run media, however, reported only on the car bombs, omitting any mention of clashes inside the building.

Exclusive Al Manar footage showed a group of soldiers surrounding a building at the compound and shooting at targets inside. Shortly afterward, a pickup truck with a heavy machine gun mounted on it joins the battle.

Eventually, dozens of troops are seen storming the building and going up the stairs from one room to the other amid smoke. The bodies of three gunmen are seen on the floor, one with an apparent suicide belt tied around his waist.

Shaeito said that in the mayhem following the explosions, gunmen had infiltrated the army command headquarters, taken up positions and begun shooting at soldiers. He said the gunmen "moved from floor to floor and room to room" and tossed grenades at soldiers outside.

He said it took soldiers about 45 minutes to storm the building.

International diplomacy has failed to stop the bloodshed in Syria. Syrian activists said more than 305 people were killed across Syria on Wednesday, making it one of the deadliest days since the conflict began.

They included at least 40 people whose bodies were discovered in a suburb of Damascus, some of whom appeared to have been killed execution-style. The exact circumstances in which the victims were killed remain unclear because of strict restrictions on the media.

Georgia's richest man runs for country's top job

UREKI, Georgia (AP) ? Georgia's richest man, billionaire and philanthropist Bidzina Ivanishvili seems to have it all ? a head-spinning fortune, the respect of his country and gleaming, art-filled palaces across the globe, including one where zebras and pink flamingoes roam.

What else could he want?

Political power, it turns out, and that has put him on a collision course with President Mikhail Saakashvili ? his onetime close friend and ally.

Since announcing his ambitions a year ago, Ivanishvili has been stripped of his Georgian citizenship and hit with fines of tens of millions of dollars. But he is undeterred in leading his Georgian Dream party into parliamentary elections next week that he hopes will make him prime minister, set to become the country's most powerful job after legislative changes next year.

The outcome of will have profound consequences for this small but strategically located South Caucasus nation, which has been the West's most loyal ally in a troubled, energy-rich region.

The 56-year-old Ivanishvili, worth an estimated $6.4 billion, was an early supporter of Saakashvili after he came to power following the 2003 Rose Revolution demonstrations that drove out the corruption-riddled regime of Eduard Shevardnadze. But Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia, gradually became disenchanted and began to fear that his disagreements with Saakashvili could imperil his future.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he suggested that his entry into politics was at least partly to shield him from government pressure.

"When you enter politics, it gives you some kind of protection," he said in his residence outside the Black Sea resort of Batumi. But he insists that his rags-to-riches story also points to a deeper drive to help his country: "A smart, gifted person can do things for himself, but also for his friends, for his village, for his country."

Ivanishvili was the youngest of five children in a hilltop village so poor and remote that a rickety old truck brought supplies just once a month. He often had no shoes and dreamt of owning a bicycle. After earning an engineering degree in the capital Tbilisi, he moved to Moscow, where he received a Ph.D. in labor economy.

When Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev launched his perestroika campaign and gradually allowed private entrepreneurship, Ivanishvili and a friend seized the spirit of the times. They began importing personal computers ? rarities in the Soviet Union that cost the equivalent of two or three cars. Sometimes he would approach foreigners at cafes and plead with them to bring computers on their next visit.

In 1990, a year before the Soviet Union collapsed, Ivanishvili and his partners amassed enough money to start a bank, Rossiyskiy Kredit, which became a leading financial institution. Its first office was at a kindergarten, and foreign partners coming for meetings stumbled over miniature toddler toilets. As his bank expanded, Ivanishvili started buying into mining and metals plants across Russia, and then reselling the shares at huge profit.

Skeptics wonder whether it was possible to amass such a fortune honestly, but Ivanishvili insists that he always ran a clean business.

"I never violated any laws," he said, "I never betrayed or deceived anyone."

For years, Ivanishvili was a quiet benefactor of thousands of his impoverished countrymen and also of Saakashvili's government, building schools and hospitals, buying new boots and blankets for the military and, he says, even paying for Saakashvili's inauguration. He also collected art and exotic animals and erected futuristic residences across the country, like a glass-and-steel fortress nestled on a hilltop in the capital Tbilisi.

But Ivanishvili says he broke off ties with Saakashvili after the leader cracked down on opposition protests in 2007, tightened control over media, and Georgia found itself in a brief but disastrous war with Russia in 2008. Saakashvili's government was further tainted in recent days when TV channels funded by Ivanishvili released videos of inmates at a Tbilisi prison being beaten and raped with objects, which sparked angry street protests.

"He has a built a tough, authoritarian government while at the same time trying to prove to Europe and America that he is building democracy," Ivanishvili said. "The people have been deceived, including me."

The two men's feud seems highly personal.

Saakashvili denounces Ivanishvili as a Russian stooge, referring to his Georgian Dream coalition as "forces of darkness." The president's camp also accuses Ivanishvili of corrupting Georgian politics and voters with his wealth ? which is equivalent to roughly half of Georgia's GDP.

Ivanishvili, in turn, portrays Saakashvili as a dim-witted former protege who used to call him a "hundred" times a day to ask for advice on running the country.

An August opinion survey by U.S.-based National Democratic Institute suggested that Saakashvili's United National Movement leads the polls with 37 percent support, while Georgian Dream has 12 percent. But Ivanishvili claims he has momentum on his side, with support surging since the release of the prison rape video.

So far Ivanishvili's political career brought him nothing but trouble.

He was stripped of Georgian citizenship a year ago, shortly after he announced his entry into politics. The official reason was that he also had a French passport ? and Georgia prohibits dual nationality. Even though parliament then adopted a law allowing Ivanishvili to run for office as an EU citizen, Ivanishvili said the loss of Georgian citizenship was deeply upsetting, especially considering the $1.5 billion he says he has spent on charity here.

The government then followed by fining him tens of millions of dollars over campaign funding violations, saying that distributing satellite TV dishes and offering a fleet of cars to his party amounts to vote-buying according to recently passed electoral laws that ban corporate donations to parties.

Some observers said the changes were necessary. Others, including Maina Kiai, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, said the legislation was aimed at preventing "certain individuals" from running in the upcoming vote ? an apparent reference to Ivanishvili.

Ivanishvili bristles at Saakashvili's accusations that if elected he would serve Russia, not Georgia ? calling such suspicions "laughable." Ivanishvili renounced his long-held Russian citizenship before launching his political career and has sold off his Russian assets to sever his financial ties with Moscow. Most of his assets are now in Western banks and about $1 billion in art.

Some experts agree that he's his own man, pointing to the fact that he had funded Saakashvili, the Kremlin's arch-foe, for years.

"All the evidence suggests that he is no one's project but his own," said Thomas de Waal, a Caucasus expert with the Carnegie Endowment. At the same, time the Kremlin is likely to court Ivanishvili, eager to have someone unseat Saakashvili.

Ivanishvili promises aggressive and quick reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and prompt foreign and local businessmen to invest in the economy. He intends to pursue a pro-Western policy and one day bring Georgia into NATO, while at the same time unfreezing economic ties with Russia ? something he himself acknowledges would be a very complicated task. "You just need to wait for the right time and without doubt improve relations with Russia," Ivanishvili said.

Ivanishvili vows that he will not be corrupted by power, noting that as a businessman he only promoted those who were not afraid to argue with him. But when describing how he would reform Georgia, he revealed some monarchic overtones.

"In such small countries," Ivanishvili said, "everything depends on one person, everyone else follows immediately."

Rich colors of a cosmic seagull

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? This new image from the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory shows part of a stellar nursery nicknamed the Seagull Nebula. This cloud of gas, formally called Sharpless 2-292, seems to form the head of the seagull and glows brightly due to the energetic radiation from a very hot young star lurking at its heart. The detailed view was produced by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope.

Nebulae are among the most visually impressive objects in the night sky. They are interstellar clouds of dust, molecules, hydrogen, helium and other ionised gases where new stars are being born. Although they come in different shapes and colours many share a common characteristic: when observed for the first time, their odd and evocative shapes trigger astronomers' imaginations and lead to curious names. This dramatic region of star formation, which has acquired the nickname of the Seagull Nebula, is no exception.

This new image from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile shows the head part of the Seagull Nebula [1]. It is just one part of the larger nebula known more formally as IC 2177, which spreads its wings with a span of over 100 light-years and resembles a seagull in flight. This cloud of gas and dust is located about 3700 light-years away from Earth. The entire bird shows up best in wide-field images (http://www.eso.org/public/images/eso1237c/).

The Seagull Nebula lies just on the border between the constellations of Monoceros (The Unicorn) and Canis Major (The Great Dog) and is close to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula lies more than four hundred times further away than the famous star.

The complex of gas and dust that forms the head of the seagull glows brightly in the sky due to the strong ultraviolet radiation coming mostly from one brilliant young star -- HD 53367 [2] -- that can be spotted in the centre of the image and could be taken to be the seagull's eye.

The radiation from the young stars causes the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow with a rich red colour and become an HII region [3]. Light from the hot blue-white stars is also scattered off the tiny dust particles in the nebula to create a contrasting blue haze in some parts of the picture.

Although a small bright clump in the Seagull Nebula complex was observed for the first time by the German-British astronomer Sir William Herschel back in 1785, the part shown here had to await photographic discovery about a century later.

By chance this nebula lies close in the sky to the Thor's Helmet Nebula (NGC 2359), which was the winner of ESO's recent Choose what the VLT Observes contest (ann12060: http://www.eso.org/public/announcements/ann12060/). This nebula, with its distinctive shape and unusual name, was picked as the first ever object selected by members of the public to be observed by ESO's Very Large Telescope. These observations are going to be part of the celebrations on the day of ESO's 50th anniversary, 5 October 2012. The observations will be streamed live from the VLT on Paranal. Stay tuned!

Several ill in Canada after eating possibly contaminated steaks

(Reuters) - Several people became ill after eating steaks that may contain E. coli bacteria sold at a store in Edmonton, Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said on Wednesday.

The announcement follows a series of beef product recalls that have raised concerns about meat processing standards in Canada.

The CFIA warned the public not to eat Kirkland brand beef steaks sold between September 4 and 7 at the Costco Wholesale Corp store on 50th Street in Edmonton.

The agency has not identified the supplier of the potentially contaminated beef, said CFIA spokesman Tim O'Connor.

One of the suppliers to the store is XL Foods' Brooks, Alberta, plant. Beginning in early September, privately held XL Foods has voluntarily recalled more than 250 beef products made at the plant after positive findings of E. coli.

E. coli bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

XL Foods issued a statement saying it is "deeply concerned" for the people who became ill, adding that there has been no definitive link between its products and the cases of illness.

The United States halted imports of beef products from the XL Foods plant in Brooks, which is one of the largest in Canada, on September 13.

Canada is the sixth-largest beef and veal exporter in the world.

The CFIA has completed its review of the plant's food safety controls and found XL Foods could not demonstrate that it regularly updated its plan to control E. coli in the facility, the agency said.

Stay tuned!
