British broadcaster ITV sees advertising boost ahead

By Paul Sandle

LONDON (Reuters) - ITV, Britain's largest free-to-air commercial broadcaster, said it expected demand for advertising to bounce back strongly this summer after it suffered from having no Olympics coverage a year ago.

Chief Executive Adam Crozier said his talks with advertisers indicated that they were becoming more confident about spending.

"While that sentiment has shifted I don't think that has quite yet turned into actual behaviour," he said. "But I think it would be fair to say the fear of the downside seems to have largely diluted and people are now looking more positively."

The company posted a better-than-expected 16 percent rise in first-half profit, year-on-year, as its production business offset weaker ad demand.

Income from advertising across its channels, which feature shows such as "Coronation Street" and "Broadchurch", fell by an expected 3 percent in the half, the broadcaster said, but was coming back strongly.

It was expected to rise 12 percent in July, 20 percent in August and to be flat in September, compared with the same months in 2012, which would produce a broadly flat first nine months of the year, ITV said, sending shares to a 12-year high.

Crozier said last year advertising was affected by the coverage of major sporting events. ITV showed the Euro 2012 soccer tournament last June, but had no coverage of the London Olympics in July and August.

"This year is a mirror issue of last year," he said. "Last year because of the Euros and the Olympics people brought advertising out of July and August into June, and this year it shifted back the other way."

He said telecoms group BT was stepping up promotion around the launch of its sports channel, while its competitor pay-TV company BSkyB was also increasing advertising. Supermarkets, carmakers and the government were also spending more, he said.

MR SELFRIDGE

ITV has been building its production business, both by making more programmes for its own channels and other broadcasters, and by acquisitions in Britain and abroad.

Revenues in its production arm, which makes dramas such as "Mr Selfridge" and "The Psychopath Next Door", rose 11 percent to 395 million pounds, out of a overall company total of 1.3 billion pounds, while earnings from the unit increased 26 percent to 63 million pounds.

Shares in ITV rose to a new 12-year high of 166.5 pence in early trading. They were trading up 4 percent at 163.5 pence by 1036 GMT, the second-highest riser in the FTSE 100 index.

Analysts at Numis said the results were slightly ahead of its forecasts, and it raised its outlook for full-year ad revenue from flat to 1.5 percent and its pretax profit forecast to around 530 million pounds ($814 million) from 515 million pounds.

"We remain firm supporters of ITV, which is executing well on rebalancing the group by deploying cash flow into building (its production business) ITV Studios, while we view it as a natural play on UK macro recovery," they said.

Crozier shrugged off the impact of the merger between major ads groups Publicis and Omnicom on ITV, announced at the weekend.

"The media buying side is pretty consolidated anyway," he said. "We are perfectly capable given our of scale of handling ourselves in that market."

ITV reported first-half adjusted pretax profit of 270 million pounds, up 16 percent, on revenue up 2 percent to 1.3 billion pounds.

Analysts at Citi were expecting ITV to report revenues of 1.13 billion pounds and adjusted pretax profit of 256 million pounds, against consensus of 1.11 billion pounds and 263 million pounds.

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Well, whether you think "Blurred Lines" is "great art" or not, it sure is a catchy tune. Be sure to check out the videos of Thicke's performances from TODAY and the great tweets, Vines and Instagrams from our fans and TODAY anchors.

Gays Willing To Destroy The Church And Jail Christians For ?The Way They Do Sex? Says Robertson

Post image for Gays Willing To Destroy The Church And Jail Christians For ?The Way They Do Sex? Says Robertson

Pat Robertson says that gay people are willing to destroy the church, the military, businesses, and marriage itself, all to gain affirmation for ?the way they do sex.? The octogenarian multi-millionaire televangelist says loving Christians are required to try to stem ?sexual immorality,? and thus required to stop gay people from being gay.

Gay people, Robertson falsely states, are ?willing to destroy the church if need be, then to destroy the military if need be, then to destroy marriage if need be, then to destroy businesses if need be,? in order to have an affirmation of the fact that the way they perform sex acts is acceptable by the society.?

Ironically, Robertson says he worries Christians will be jailed for these acts of ?love.? Fundamentalist and evangelical Christians, from the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli have called for the jailing of gay people for their acts of love too, waging campaigns to jail Americans for having same-sex sex.

?If you see somebody who is not going to go to Heaven and you really love him you want to do what it takes to get him into Heaven, if you don?t care about him you let him go to Hell,? Robertson said. ?We are people who love, and yet now your love is going to put you in jail, because the people who are going to Hell through their lifestyle think, ?well, we want to be affirmed.??

Cold French winter shores up EDFs' H1 profit

PARIS (AP) ? France's state controlled nuclear power giant EDF says its net profit rose 3.5 percent in the first half as a result of a cold winter and high electricity prices.

The company, which runs all France's 58 nuclear power plants and has a stake in one of the U.S.'s biggest nuclear power companies, made 2.88 billion euros ($3.8 billion) during the period, up from 2.78 billion euros a year earlier.

Profits were driven mainly by its home market, though earnings were solid in Italy and Britain too. EDF owns British Energy, Britain's largest electricity producer. In Italy it owns Edison, the country's second largest electricity producer.

EDF says operating profit should rise "at least" 3 percent this year on an organic basis, excluding Edison, down from 4.6 percent achieved last year.

2013 MVPs Selected & Named: 9 Individuals in 7 ... - Franchising.com

Franchising is a tough business, and succeeding even tougher. But with a keen eye on the bottom line, customer service, and community involvement, there are a handful of multi-unit franchisees who rise to the top. We like to call them superstars and once a year Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine recognizes a select few with our Annual MVP Awards. This year we carefully selected 9 individuals who have demonstrated character, innovation, and sacrifice within their markets and brands. We'd also like to thank our sponsor, Comcast, for their support in making these awards possible. Here's a little more about each of this year's winners. Their full profiles follow.

William Ray BruceWilliam Ray Bruce
Noble Cause
Abundant Brands; Subway, Costa Vida, Roxberry Juice, and Big Al's BBQ

William Ray Bruce has always had a "do good vibe" philosophy to business. Abundant Brands is comprised of more than 280 Subways, Costa Vidas, Roxberry Juice, and Big Al's BBQ in Utah. So it's perhaps not surprising that in 2012 he teamed up with The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City to provide meals to the hungry and homeless one day a week. He was inspired to donate the extra food for meals at the shelter after seeing a documentary about hungry people in the U.S. "diving" into trash bins to subsist on what is discarded daily by restaurants. He began the program in February of 2012. He delivers enough for about 450 meals every Thursday. More recently, he has begun "Subway Tuesdays" where he uses leftover bread and meats to feed those in need. His "do good vibe" is the cornerstone of his 280-plus franchise units.

Guillermo PeralesGuillermo Perales
American Dream
Sun Holdings; Burger King, Popeyes, Arby's, Golden Corral, and CiCi's

Guillermo Perales thinks big. He's about to pass 400 units and he provides jobs to more than 10,000 employees. The native of Mexico came to America in search of success and he found it. His Sun Holdings, LLC was ranked among top 10 in the Restaurant Finance Monitor in 2012 and he is the largest Latino restaurant franchisee in the U.S. He also co-founded the Latin American/DFW Fund to raise money for Latino-based programs and initiatives. And he supports education by providing incentives for Latino students to stay in school. His Certificate of Achievement Award program provides five million free meal certificates every year to local students through the program. He also recognizes armed services veterans with free meals at his restaurants on Veteran's Day each year.

Danny SonenshineDanny Sonenshine
Spirit of Franchising
Far West Restaurant Group; Wingstop

Danny Sonenshine operates 21 Wingstop restaurants in Southern California. He opened one of the very first locations in Los Angeles (there are now 60 locations in the market) and recently opened the second test concept Wingstop Sports location in the country. He serves as president of the Wingstop Southern California Advertising Co-op and the Wingstop Franchise Advisory Council. Now he's got his sights set on Hawaii and Guam, where he has the rights to develop. He loves being a part of his community and spearheading things like a Wingstop SoCal sponsorship with the LA Lakers, Dodgers, and Angels. He provides a great example for how franchisees can get involved in their communities and be successful business operators.

Steve BalivaSteve Baliva
Noble Cause
Partner, of Metz Culinary; TGI Friday's, Ruth's Chris Steak House, and Wolfgang Puck Express

Steve Baliva brings consistency to operations and focuses on bottom line profitability in all 3 of his brands. He has 13 T.G.I. Friday's; 1 Ruth's Chris Steak House; 1Wolfgang Puck Express; and 1 Lucky's Sporthouse. His team and communication skills have helped to build a strong, healthy business, that is characterized by growth. He believes it's important not just to operate a successful business but to be involved in the community, and he demonstrated that during the recent Hurricane Sandy that struck the east coast. During the natural disaster, two of his stores lost power but that didn't stop him. He was in the middle of things helping his employees move the food to other locations, working shifts to help fill in, donating and delivering endless amounts of food from their TGIF to shelters of those affected - including his employees.

Samantha GoldsmithSamantha Goldsmith
Influencer
Goldsmith Companies; Red Mango

It's taken 25-year-old Samantha Goldsmith less than three years to open 10 Red Mango locations on her native Long Island. That quick start approach makes her the healthy yogurt system's youngest franchisee and largest multi-unit owner, and has made Long Island the single largest market for the brand. She's loved the brand's healthy products since day one and is a big believer in marketing. She has used Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare accounts to promote her store growth. She's something of a rock star at her store grand openings and the recipient of the Influencer Award. "It's great when young people come to the manager and ask if I'm there because they want to talk to me about being successful in business," she says.

Joe HertzmanJoe Hertzman
Innovation
The Radcliff Group; Rally's

Joe Hertzman opened his first Rally's restaurant 28 years ago. Today he operates 24 Papa John's; 13 Rally's; and 7 Long John Silver's. He's always been a bit of an innovator. Last year he played a critical role in developing the brand's Peak 150 program to improve lunch performance. He also advocated a waffle cone be added to the chain's new Cold Creations menu; a product that has differentiated Checkers/Rally's from its competition, wowed guests, and driven sales.

He's an influential leader on the Franchise Advisory Council, and in 2012, won the Sustained Sales Growth award for achieving 41 percent sales growth on a five-year basis across his entire business. But it's his innovative spirit that has earned him the Franchisee of the Year Award from Rally's/Checkers.

Spencer SmithSpencer Smith
Role Model
The Smith Group; Aaron's

Not all role models are flashy and charismatic. Sometimes the best ones are thoughtful and soft-spoken. Spencer Smith is such a leader. The Colorado multi-unit, multi-brand franchisee has earned his success by "following the program" and the Golden Rule. And it's all paid off. A staunch family man who grew up working at his father's tire store and on the family farm, believes that you can diligently follow the franchise system and have a spirit of innovation or entrepreneurship. Smith, who opened 39 Aaron's stores in eight years and nine months, also owns two Big O Tires. He succeeds by treating his employees and customers the same way he would want to be treated coupled with execution and delivery of service.

Kevin and Laurel WilkersonKevin and Laurel Wilkerson
Veteran Entrepreneurship Award
Marco's Pizza

Kevin and Laurel Wilkerson served a combined 44 years in the U.S. Army. That, they say, prepared them for life in franchising. They've been in the Marco's Pizza system for 3-and-a-half years now and are getting results. In September 2012, they had the highest opening sales of any Marco's in the country. In April 2013, they had the second highest opening sales of any Marco's in the U.S. In 2011, Kevin was selected as the Area Representative of the Year for Marco's. And in 2012, one of their units was acknowledged for being in the top 10 in sales for the year. The couple rely on tools like gorilla marketing and direct mail to build business at their 7 locations. Kevin served as the inaugural President of the Area Rep Leadership Council (ARLC) and worked with the franchisor to create meaningful and lasting improvements to the system. He has also been instrumental in training many new franchisees for the Marcos system, even attending many of the new franchisees' store openings to lend a helping hand.

Saar: Freeing Terrorists in Israel's Interest

Freeing terrorists with blood on their hands will ultimately be in Israel?s favor, Minister of the Interior Gidon Saar argued Sunday, as the government prepared to vote on a plan to free over 100 prisoners as a "gesture" to the Palestinian Authority.

?It?s easy and populist to vote ?no? ? but what would happen if all of us, or even half of us, voted ?no??? he asked.

He answered himself, ?A vote against would mean the government of Israel rejects the agreement that the Prime Minister made with the American Secretary of State. The negotiations would not open. Israel would be blamed ? even by its best friends ? for the fact that they did not open.?

Israel must be cautious, Saar warned. ?Our position in the international system is not a simple one, to put it mildly. We are likely to deteriorate quickly, in a manner that would have a severe impact on our national interests,? he argued.

?To clarify, these national interests include our ability to insist on defensible borders,? he added.

The Palestinian Authority wanted three main things from Israel in advance of talks, Saar said: the release of terrorist prisoners, a full ban on construction in Israeli towns east of the 1949 armistice line, and an agreement that territorial negotiations would be based on the 1949 armistice line.

Netanyahu made a strategic choice, he said. ?If you look at the main reason we have been dealing with diplomatic difficulties since the former government was established in 2009, it is our unwillingness ? which has not changed ? to accept the ?67 lines as a basis for talks? The Prime Minister was tested in this matter, it was not easy ? including opposite the President of the United States? This is a central strategic issue,? he explained.

?I think that it would have been very hard to stand our ground regarding settlements, too,? he continued. ?If we had given in on the matter of settlements, we would have earned more points with the international community. Our refusal to release prisoners would have been accepted in those circumstances.?

?But that would be a more dangerous concession,? he warned. ?That would have been giving our stamp of approval to delegitimizing the settlement enterprise, and it would have extra meaning coming immediately after the European Union?s latest decision.?

?Today, the members of government face two bad choices: to vote for, or vote against. I believe that a vote against is a decision that would do far more damage than a vote for,? he concluded.

Significant opposition

Despite Saar's insistence, not all members of the government?are convinced that the release is a good thing, to put it mildly.

Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) MK and Knesset faction chairwoman?Ayelet?Shaked slammed the move as a "surrender to the Americans" on?Sunday.

Speaking at a rally opposing the release of terrorists, Shaked accused the government of forgetting "why we are here and?how to?stay here. It started with giving in to terror in the Shalit deal and continues with surrendering to the Americans. For what?? She added that although Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard killed no one, and shed no blood, he is still sitting in a prison, decades later, despite appeals even from the prime minister himself.

Bayit Yehudi leader and Minister of Economy?Naftali?Bennett?has said that he strongly opposes the move and will vote against it when it is brought up for a vote at the cabinet.

UK help to buy scheme risks housing bubble, says business minister

LONDON (Reuters) - A flagship scheme to help British housebuyers could fuel property price inflation, the business minister said on Sunday, in the latest clash over policy between the two parties in the country's governing coalition.

"I am worried of the danger of getting into another housing bubble," Business Secretary Vince Cable told BBC television's Andrew Marr Show of a proposed extension of the Help to Buy scheme of government-backed home loans designed to revive the housing market.

Cable is a leading member of the Liberal Democrats, the junior party in the coalition, who has locked horns with his Conservative partners - backers of the scheme - over a number of economic policy issues.

Earlier this month he said Prime Minister David Cameron was endangering economic recovery by promising a referendum on European Union membership. Last week he accused the independent Bank of England of holding back economic recovery by forcing banks to build up capital.

The first phase of the Help to Buy scheme, which offers buyers of new-build properties an interest-free five-year loan for 20 percent of the property's value, kicked off in April.

But the more important second phase, which offers 12 billion pounds ($18.4 billion) of guarantees to back mortgages for buyers who lack large deposits, does not come into force until January next year.

"The Help to Buy scheme is actually quite complex. We have one part that's already operating, which is providing mortgages against new homes, nobody has questioned that," Cable said in quotes reported on the BBC's web site.

"The proposal which hasn't yet been implemented, which is providing a guarantee for a limited range of mortgages, could be a problem. It could inflate the market.

"But, if it's properly designed it could be a useful addition."

The plan has been welcomed by British mortgage lenders and housebuilders but criticised by the International Monetary Fund and the government's own budget watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility. Both warned that prices are likely to be pumped up more than supply, making it harder, not easier, for first-time buyers.

Noise problem is threat to Wem swimming pool ? Shropshire Star

The ageing swimming pool in Wem could be closed by Environmental Health if noise problems are not dealt with.

Wem Town Council has to reduce the noise created by the air handling unit at the Butler Sports Centre, in Bowens Field, after complaints from nearby residents.

And the council has been dealt a second blow as it has been advised to replace the leaking water system at the pool as well.

The emergency improvements come despite ongoing plans for redevelopment at the pool, due to take place in the coming years, but the council will have to do a ?patch repair? immediately.

Clerk Jane Drummond told a meeting of Wem Town Council in Edinburgh House on Thursday night something needs to happen now. She said: ?We have had two leaks within 12 months and we have been asked to look into replacing the water supply.

?We have been advised by the new managers, Teme Leisure, to look into replacing it. The noise problem has been caused because there is no insulation and we are looking at putting a silencer in.?

The latest leak cost almost ?900 to repair but Mrs Drummond said at the moment she does not know how much the improvement work will cost.

Councillor Edward Towers questioned the need to spend the money. He said it seemed wasteful when the Friends of Wem Swimming Pool group is looking at taking over and redeveloping.

But mayor of Wem, Councillor Connie Granger, said: ?If we don?t do anything Environmental Health will close us down, we haven?t got a choice.?

Councillor Chris Mellings said it is about ?keeping it legal?.

And Councillor Mandy Meakin added: ?We need to get what we have got running properly. We have got to keep the pool.?

Malcolm Adkins is chair of the Friends of Wem Swimming Centre. He said he was very pleased to see the council acting so quickly.

He said: ?It is a nuisance, the pool was built in the 1970s so it is all getting a bit tired, this is an example of that.

?Hopefully we will be solving the problem properly when we take over.

?It is a shame for the council that they have got to do what is effectively a patch repair but it has got to be done.?

Last year the future of the pool was thrown into doubt when Teme Leisure declared it was pulling out after two years of management.

The Friends group and the Severn Centre in Highley applied to take over and Wem Town Council awarded the job to Severn Centre ? but at the 11th hour Teme Leisure decided to continue running it.

Now The Friends group is looking to raise ?1million to take over on January 1 2015.

Mr Adkins said they will prioritise installing a new state-of-the-art power unit which will cost up to ?140,000.

Potential for new, less invasive ways to detect and treat bladder cancer

Scientists from Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center have provided evidence from preclinical experiments that a gene known as melanoma differentiation associated gene-9/syntenin (mda-9/syntenin) could be used as a therapeutic target to kill bladder cancer cells, help prevent metastasis and even be used to non-invasively diagnose the disease and monitor its progression.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, was a collaborative effort between Paul B. Fisher, M.Ph., Ph.D., who originally discovered the mda-9/syntenin gene, and Santanu Dasgupta, Ph.D., an expert in bladder cancer research. Through cell cultures and mouse models of human bladder cancer, the researchers demonstrated that mda-9/syntenin helps to regulate bladder cancer growth and metastasis. They also showed that an increase in the gene's expression correlates with disease progression, making it a promising target for detecting and monitoring the growth and metastasis of bladder cancer. In addition, suppressing mda-9/syntenin expression resulted in a substantial decrease in cancer growth and its ability to spread.

"Currently, there are no biomarkers that can accurately predict bladder cancer metastasis, or monitor its progression," says Fisher, Thelma Newmeyer Corman Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and co-leader of the Cancer Molecular Genetics program at VCU Massey, chairman of the Department of Human and Molecular Genetics at VCU School of Medicine and director of the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM). "Our findings could assist in the development of innovative ways to detect, monitor and treat bladder cancer."

The team discovered that mda-9/syntenin regulates bladder cancer progression by impacting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling. EGFR is located on the surface of bladder cancer cells and plays a part in a variety of mechanisms that contribute to cell proliferation, the growth of new blood vessels, cell migration and resistance to apoptosis - a form of cell suicide. The researchers showed that mda-9/syntenin physically binds to EGFR and disrupts a variety of processes that help keep cancer in check.

Fisher has previously shown that mda-9/syntenin is overexpressed in a variety of cancers and is a key contributor to metastasis in melanoma. Fisher and Dasgupta plan to continue exploring the role of mda-9/syntenin in the development of bladder cancer. Future studies will utilize animal models to determine the mechanisms by which the gene helps to initiate the disease in order determine the point at which the gene's expression indicates a positive cancer diagnosis.

"Bladder cancer is often diagnosed through an invasive procedure that involves inserting a flexible camera through the urethra, which may cause some people to delay testing and, in turn, treatment," says Dasgupta, member of the Cancer Molecular Genetics program at VCU Massey, assistant professor in the VCU Department of Human and Molecular Genetics and VIMM member. "We hope that our studies will lead to new, less invasive ways to detect and treat bladder cancer and, ultimately, fewer deaths."

Weekly Ketchup: Fruitvale Station Director and Star Sought for Rocky Spinoff Creed

This week coming off the end of San Diego Comic-Con lacked some of the big names seen in a typical week. But, hey, that just left room for two different remakes of Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, as well as remakes of The Butterfly Effect, and a Rocky spinoff focusing on Apollo Creed's grandson. Every thing old is new again.

This Week's Top Story

FROM FRUITVALE STATION TO GETTING THE EYE OF THE TIGER BACK: THE ROCKY SPINOFF CREED

For several years now, MGM has been the studio most regarded as something of a remake factory. MGM has the rights to many classic films, and rather than sequelizing them (which wouldn't be lauded much either), MGM does lots and lots of remakes. Fame, The Taking of Pelham 123, and the upcoming Carrie, RoboCop and Poltergeist remakes... That's all MGM. This story, however, sees the studio reviving one of their biggest franchises (possibly second only to their continuing James Bond franchise), but not as a remake or a true sequel. The Rocky franchise is getting a spinoff movie called Creed, about the boxing career of the grandson of Rocky and Rocky II opponent Apollo Creed. MGM is in early talks with both director Ryan Coogler -- currently in theaters with his debut film, the true story of Fruitvale Station -- and, for the title character, with that film's star, Michael B. Jordan, who appeared last year in Chronicle, and is rumored to be in talks to play the new Johnny Storm in the 2015 reboot of The Fantastic Four. Sylvester Stallone is also expected to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa as the new Creed's trainer. For reasons obvious to anyone who ever saw Rocky IV, Carl Weathers is probably less likely to appear in the new Creed. Ryan Coogler will cowrite Creed with Aaron Covington, but which Aaron Covington it will be is anyone's guess (who knew there were so many in Hollywood?).

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 ROSAMUND PIKE LANDS TITLE ROLE IN DAVID FINCHER'S GONE GIRL

After Ben Affleck was cast as the male lead in director David Fincher's next film, the Gillian Flynn novel adaptation Gone Girl, the next obvious step was casting the title character. That process reportedly included consideration of Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Emily Blunt, Abbie Cornish, and Olivia Wilde. This week, we learned that the actress to actually land the role was Rosamund Pike, who isn't a household name yet in the USA, but has been seen in a variety of films, including Die Another Day, Wrath of the Titans, and last year's Jack Reacher. Rosamund Pike will play a woman who disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary, leading to suspicion of her husband (Ben Affleck). Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are also being considered for other roles. Filming starts in September. Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac) chose Gone Girl as his next film after deals fell apart on some of his other projects, including the Disney action remake 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the sequel The Girl Who Played with Fire.

#2 BEN FOSTER TO CYCLE INTO THEATERS AS LANCE ARMSTRONG

It's fairly typical for a hot button subject to inspire various projects from competing studios and producers, and in most cases, whichever one actually starts filming first "wins" the race, such as it were. (It's less common that one of the projects keeps going regardless, but that obviously also happens, as Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down most recently demonstrated). In the months after the revelations of Lance Armstrong's doping came out, his story quickly became one such hot project. Previously, most of the news has gone to projects from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Paramount (which Bradley Cooper may have been in talks for), and another from Recount and Game Change director Jay Roach. Today, we learned that the dark horse contender that may actually "win the race" is one from British production company Working Title. Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) is attached to direct, with American actor Ben Foster in final talks to play Lance Armstrong. Ben Foster has built up a strong list of supporting roles, including playing a baddie in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, and roles in the Marvel movies X-Men: The Last Stand (as Angel) and The Punisher (as Spacker Dave). Presumably, Ben Foster also knows how to ride a bike. Working Title expects to start filming their untitled Lance Armstrong movie this fall.

#3 MELISSA MCCARTHY TO REUNITE WITH BRIDESMAIDS/THE HEAT DIRECTOR FOR SPY COMEDY SUSAN COOPER

Melissa McCarthy is in talks to make a third movie with director Paul Feig after their first two movies together (Bridesmaids and The Heat) were both critical and box office hits (the first more than the second, but still). Their third movie together will be a spy comedy called Susan Cooper, which is being compared to the 2006 James Bond reboot Casino Royale. One has to presume they mean if there was already a successful movie franchise about a heavy set female spy (or maybe that they're pretending that there is, and that's half of the joke).

#4 GWYNETH PALTROW AND EWAN MCGREGOR MAY JOIN JOHNNY DEPP IN MORTDECAI

After contract disputes caused the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass to stall, Johnny Depp recently moved on to star in the novel adaptation Mortdecai instead, which will be directed by David Koepp (Secret Window, Premium Rush). This week, we learned that Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor are also now in talks to join Johnny Depp in the film. The story of Mortdecai will depict "an antihero art dealer and rogue who is in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold."

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#5 JAMES MCAVOY TO PLAY FRANKENSTEIN TO DANIEL RADCLIFFE'S IGOR

One has to wonder if James McAvoy knows what he just got himself into, now having to spend years of his life explaining for the umpteenth time the difference between Frankenstein and Frankenstein's Monster. He'll just have to console himself with the swimming pool he can probably afford to fill with cash from paychecks for movies like this week's news and X-Men: First Class. Anyway, yes, James McAvoy is in talks with 20th Century Fox to play the title character, Dr. Victor Von Frankenstein, in their modern reboot of Frankenstein. Daniel Radcliffe has already been attached for a few months to costar as the scientist's assistant Igor. Frankenstein will be directed by Paul McGuigan (Push, Wicker Park, Lucky Number Slevin), whose mostly "Rotten" RT Tomatometer page is really the reason this movie remains a "Rotten Idea" whenever new stories break.

#4 THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT REMAKE TO PROBABLY CHANGE MORE THAN JUST ONE LITTLE THING

Like basically any year (ever), there will be many anniversaries "celebrated" in 2014. One that most people probably wouldn't think of is the tenth anniversary of the release of The Butterfly Effect. Then again, most people aren't the producers of The Butterfly Effect, like the Benderspink production company do. So, Benderspink has announced plans to reunite with writer-director Eric Bress on a "reboot" of The Butterfly Effect, once again telling the story of a young man who is able to travel back in time within his own past, and make changes that have unexpected impacts on his present. Yes, that's right, just like Alanis Morrissette's "Ironic", The Butterfly Effect wasn't really about "The Butterfly Effect" at all. Although Eric Bress is on board the project, he won't himself be directing the reboot, but we don't yet know exactly will get to relive his experience.

#3 SONY DEVELOPS GRAN TURISMO VIDEOGAME ADAPTATION MOVIE

As the Fast and the Furious franchise continues to bring in huge box office numbers with each new release, the other studios that are not Universal Pictures are developing their own fast cars properties. This week, apparently, someone at Sony Pictures realized that SOE owns the rights to the Gran Turismo videogame franchise. In the games, which have pretty much no narrative structure at all, players pick real life cars and then drive them around realistic looking race tracks and other racing settings. A true adaptation of Gran Turismo would probably be a ninety minute IMAX documentary of a faceless driver taking a series of cars through scenic races. Instead, Sony has set the producers of the upcoming mommie-soft-porn adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to see about getting Gran Turismo going as an actual movie, with a script and actors and everything. Disney's Touchstone Pictures will be release their own racing videogame adaptation Need for Speed on March 14, 2014.

#2 THIS WEEK IN JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME REMAKES: BLOODSPORT AND KICKBOXER

I'm clearly not a Hollywood producer. I would never get up in the morning, and say, "Hey, you know what the world needs? Another Kickboxer." And this is why I don't have a job at Radar Pictures, the company behind movies like The Last Samurai and Riddick, which is now developing a new version of that one movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme where he provides the future inspiration for a running joke on Community. The Kickboxer remake project will be directed by Stephen Fung, whose Tai Chi Zero was a recent Chinese box office hit. Most weeks, one Jean-Claude Van Damme remake would be enough (actually, more than enough), but no, the week of July 22-July 26, 2013 just had to take it to that extra special extreme. And so, this was the week that we learned that the (previously announced) reboot of Bloodsport is also moving ahead, with director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) now attached to the project.

#1 R.I.P. DENNIS FARINA (1944-2013)

If there was ever someone who proved F. Scott Fitzgerald wrong about second acts in American lives, it was Dennis Farina. Dennis Farina had a long, twenty year career as a Chicago cop before ever getting into show business, starting with a small role in the 1981 Michael Mann movie Thief. This led to a supporting role on Miami Vice, and two seasons as one of the leads in the innovative 1986-1988 TV series Crime Story (serialized storytelling spanning entire seasons? crazy talk!). Dennis Farina also went on, later in his career, to basically play Lennie Briscoe's replacement for two seasons on Law & Order after the 2004 death of Jerry Orbach. For the purpose of this column and site, however, we should specifically remember Dennis Farina's film career. Although his TV career was bookmarked by two lead roles, in movies, Dennis Farina was more of the colorfully rough supporting character type. From a classic phone conversation in Midnight Run to the awesome closing line of Guy Ritchie's Snatch, Dennis Farina was frequently quotable. Farina's other memorable roles included movies like Out of Sight, Get Shorty, and Manhunter. Our movie journey with Dennis Farina came to an end this week with his death in Scottsdale, Arizona of a blood clot on the lung. Dennis Farina was 69.

Gunman among 7 dead after Fla. apartment shootout

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) ? A gunman holding hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team that stormed the building early Saturday following an hours-long standoff, police said.

Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told The Associated Press that police got a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday that shots had been fired in a building with dozens of apartments in Hialeah, a few miles north of Miami.

Rodriguez said that when police arrived, they discovered an active shooter situation: "He's inside the building, moving from floor to floor. Eventually he barricades himself in an apartment."

A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man. Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of an apartment unit where he was holding two hostages.

But Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.

"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived. Rodriguez said he didn't have any information on how long negotiations lasted.

He said police discovered two people, a male and female, shot to death in the hallway in front of one unit. Three more, a male and two females, were found shot and killed in another apartment on a different floor. Another man who was walking his children into an apartment across the street also was killed. Rodriguez said it wasn't immediately clear whether the gunman took aim at him from an upper-level balcony or if he was hit by a stray bullet.

Zulima Niebles said police told her that three of her family members were among the victims. She said her sister Merly Sophia Niebles, her sister's husband, and her sister's daughter Priscila Perez, 16, were all shot and killed.

Zulima Niebles' husband, Agustin Hernandez, was moving the family's things out of the apartment building and into his car Saturday. Among them were several photos, one showing the teen girl smiling in a red graduation gown, another of his sister-in-law in a white dress, wearing pearls.

Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said Priscila Perez, 16, was about to enter her senior year at the school.

"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."

Officials were not identifying the gunman or victims. Rodriguez said police were still investigating.

Neighbor Fabian Valdes, who lives across the street from the site of the standoff, said he heard shots fired and then looked out his window and saw a man lying on the floor, outside the front lobby. He was on his back and had his arms and legs outstretched.

Valdes said he was in shock. "It's something you never expect," he said.

In Hialeah ? a suburb of about 230,000 residents, about three-quarters of whom are Cuban or Cuban-American ? the entrance to the quiet neighborhood lined with apartment buildings was blocked off early Saturday.

The standoff occurred in an aging beige five-story building with an open terrace in the middle. The apartment where neighbors said the shooting started was charred, the door and ceiling immediately outside burned black.

Miriam Valdes, 70, said she lives on the top floor ? one floor above where the shooting began. She said she heard gunfire and later saw smoke entering her apartment.

She described running in fear to the unit across the hall, where she stayed holed up as officers negotiated with the gunman.

From the apartment, Valdes said she could hear about eight officers talking with the gunman.

She said she heard the officers tell him to "let these people out."

"We're going to help you," she said they told him.

She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.

Ester Lazcano said she lives two doors down from where the shooting began and was in the shower when she heard the first shots. Then there were many more.

"I felt the shots," she said.

Neighbors said the gunman lived in the building with his mother, but police wouldn't confirm that information.

Rodriguez said police were still investigating identities of victims and the gunman, as well as a possible motive.

"Investigators are talking with families of the victims, neighbors, people that were present when all this began," he said. "That way we can start to piece together this huge puzzle that we're working with."

NBA notes: Ronnie Price signs with Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard Ronnie Price, giving them another veteran reserve in their backcourt.

Team officials announced the signing on Thursday.

If Price, a Utah Valley University product and former Utah Jazz backup, serves in a point guard capacity, he will likely be the Magic?s third option behind starter Jameer Nelson and possibly rookie Victor Oladipo, if he continues to successfully transition to the position in the NBA as he showed the potential to do during summer league play.

Price, 30, appeared in 39 games last season with Portland and is joining the fifth NBA team of his eight-year career. Price was undrafted in 2005, but has since appeared in 394 career games with Sacramento, Utah, Phoenix and Portland.

He spent four seasons with the Jazz, starting in 2007-08 and concluding in 2011-12. He played 232 total games for Utah, averaging 3.8 points and 1.6 assists.

He has career averages of 3.5 points and 1.4 assists.

    Around the league

Knicks ? New York re-signed veteran forward Kenyon Martin. The 6-foot-9 Martin averaged 7.2 points and 5.3 rebounds over 23.9 minutes in 18 games (11 starts) with New York last season.

Mavericks ? Forward/center Brandan Wright re-signed with Dallas. The 6-foot-10 Wright has played 113 games for Dallas, and last season averaged 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks a game while shooting 60 percent from the field. Wright?s agent, Jim Tanner, said the deal is for $10 million over two years, plus incentives.

Good God, They've Perfected the Peanut Butter Jar

Peanut butter, Nutella, salsa, you name it?if it's a condiment and moderately delicious, there's a good chance you'll be lapping it up out of a jar. Still, reliable and resealable though they may be, there's also a dark side to America's favorite container: how to get the last bits of goodness out while keeping your hands clean in the process. Jar-with-a-Twist solves that sticky little problem with a patented, twistable jar that (supposedly) makes every spoonful feel just like the first.

Innovative combination of methods at HZB leads to fundamental insights in catalyst research

Scientists of Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and collaborators have now combined the spectroscopic method "RIXS" with so-called ab initio theory in order to describe these processes in detail for a model organometallic catalyst of great interest to catalysis research the iron carbonyl complex. The team publishes its results today in the prestigious scientific journal "Angewandte Chemie International Edition".

Iron carbonyl complexes are used in a large number of chemical reactions and industrial processes, such as light-induced water reduction or catalytic carbon monoxide removal from exhaust gases. Their catalytic activity is a result of rapid formation and subsequent breaking of chemical bonds between the metal centre and the carbonyl ligands. "It is essential for us to be able to determine the strength of orbital mixing at the chemical bond by directly probing the metal centres and the ligands," says Prof. Dr. Emad Flear Aziz, head of the HZB junior research group 'Structure and Dynamics of Functional Materials'. Until recently, has not been possible to apply these studies in homogeneous catalysis which take place in solution. The development of the new "LiXEdrom" experimental station, here at HZB, which is equipped with the micro-jet technique has enabled RIXS (resonant inelastic X-ray scattering) experiments on functional materials under in-situ conditions.

In collaboration with scientists from various universities, Aziz's team has now successfully studied both the metal and the ligands under real conditions in which this particular catalysis takes place (in situ), using RIXS spectroscopy at HZB's electron storage ring BESSY II. They discovered a very strong orbital mixing between the metal and its ligands, which led to a weakening and elongation of the chemical bond during RIXS excitation. The experimental results were supported by theoretical ab initio methods by the University of Rostock. "With this new method combination, we have gained fundamental insights into the electronic structure of iron carbonyl complexes under catalysis-relevant conditions," Aziz reports. "Our approach can help provide a better understanding of reaction dynamics and metal-ligand-solvent interactions on very short time scales. This leads to better control of catalytic properties and holds great potential for the production of novel catalytically active materials."
