Albright, Suu Kyi sons among 2,000 removed from Myanmar blacklist

YANGON (Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Aung San Suu Kyi's sons and two dead U.S. congressmen were among 2,082 names removed on Thursday from a Myanmar government blacklist that gives an insight into the paranoia of its former military junta.

Late Philippine President Corazon Aquino, U.S. singer-turned-politician Sonny Bono and Kim and Alexander Aris, the sons of Nobel laureate Suu Kyi, were some of the prominent names taken off a list stacked with journalists, academics, human rights campaigners and exiled Burmese activists.

Its publication on the website of the Office of the President (www.president-office.gov.mm/) is the latest sign of surprise openness by a quasi-civilian government that has legalized protests, abolished media censorship, freed hundreds of political prisoners and embarked on economic reforms since coming to power in the former Burma in March 2011.

No reasons were given for why they had been blacklisted, but many were critics of the reclusive and thin-skinned generals who ruled Myanmar with an iron fist for 49 years and persecuted politicians, reporters and dissidents.

The list included plenty of discrepancies, including individuals mentioned several times under different name spellings. British historian Timothy Garton Ash appears as "Gartonash, Timothy John", while some unknown individuals had only one name, like "Mr. Nick", "Li Li" and "Mohammed".

The announcement said exiled Burmese removed from the blacklist of 6,165 companies, organizations and individuals would be allowed to return. It did not say which remained.

Others removed include retired diplomats once based in Myanmar, the director of Human Rights Watch Brad Adams, late U.S. congressman Tom Lantos, Suu Kyi's former physician Khin Saw Win and Yuenyong Opaku, the lead singer of popular Thai rock band, Ad Carabao.

One notable name is John Yettaw, a Vietnam War veteran jailed in 2009 after swimming across Yangon's Inya Lake in home-made fins to warn Suu Kyi of an assassination plot, resulting in the extension of her house arrest.

Among journalists taken off were British author and documentary maker John Pilger, CNN's Dan Rivers, the BBC's Sue Lloyd-Roberts and Reuters photographer Adrees Latif, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his photo of a Japanese photographer shot dead in Yangon during a crackdown on 2007 pro-democracy protests.

Authors were also mentioned, like Bertil Lintner, whose books on Myanmar include "Outrage: Burma's Struggle for Democracy", which detailed the military's savage crackdown on the 1988 protests that first brought Suu Kyi to prominence.

"I feel good, of course, to be able to visit the country I have written about for so many years," said Lintner.

The Stats Are In And Things Are Looking Up For Cats ? Doctor 'Pets'

Dogs are more likely to be owned by families with kids. Cats are more likely to be owned by singles aged between 18 and 35. The Human Society has done the stats and it looks like things are looking up for ? cats:

?Younger people are interested in cat ownership.? In fact, the data shows that a single person between the age of 18 and 34 is most likely to consider owning a cat.

Despite this apparently feeble interest in cat ownership, other research shows that cats are still the most popular pets. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association?s 2012 U.S. Pet Demographic Study, at the end of 2011 Americans owned 74.1 million cats, compared with 69.9 million dogs. And a 2011 CATalyst Council study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association shed some light on cat ownership. The study identified the need for ?cat-friendly? education and training for both pet owners and veterinary staff to increase care for cats.?

So the winner in the eternal battle between cat and dogs is about to be?announced?and the medal goes to ? the more compact pet.

It?s sad but it?s becoming harder to own a ?family pet? as the ?family? itself is in decline.

The Beginning of the End of Outsourcing Manufacturing to China?

Albert Kraus | August 28, 2012 | Procurex Cost Containment Blog

For many years the mantra for U.S. based manufacturing companies was that if you want to stay in business, you better start?outsourcing from?China. Out of all of the?low cost countries?offering incentives to American companies to relocate production overseas, China has done the most to facilitate the rapid advancement of?low cost sourcing?to their country.

The reason why the?cost of manufacturing in China?is less than it is in established industrialized countries like the U.S. is because the Chinese government was able to rig its currency, maintain unregulated factories, offer subsidies and tap into a deep well of cheap labor. It became impossible for American companies to ignore the financial benefits of moving?manufacturing offshore, leaving thousands of American workers stranded without jobs. It also became common to hear about factories that had been in business for decades suddenly shuttering their doors. America, which was once known as a great industrial nation, was on the brink of losing its esteemed reputation for being producers of the best products money could buy.

An intriguing trend is happening that promises to turn things around completely. U.S. companies that had heeded the call to reduce the?cost of procurement?drastically by moving production to China are now doing what?s called?reverse offshoring. It turns out that as China matures as a growing industrialized nation, the?cost and benefit of outsourcing?there have gradually begun to shift. The three major concerns that are causing companies to reevaluate their true?outsourcing cost savings?are: government-sponsored IP theft, lags in product delivery time and rising wages. For instance, in 2000 the average Chinese worker was making just $0.58 per hour. Today they make around $4, and by 2015, estimates show that they?ll be making between $6 and $7 per hour on average. If a company?s main reason for relocating to China was to reduce labor costs, this savings is quickly becoming less of a factor.

For these reasons, many companies, including such stalwarts as GE, Caterpillar, Dow Chemicals, Ford, Google and Apple have taken steps to move some or all of their production back to U.S. shores. Apparently,?offshore manufacturing in China?has already seen its heyday. With new manufacturing technologies like 3D printers coming into play,?the cost of outsourcing?overseas will no longer provide the type of savings as seen in the past. Instead, companies will reap more benefits by having their factories closer to home, where production can be closely monitored for quality control. Delivery times will also be much faster. American workers can be trained for new skills, continuing to earn a decent wage, while companies enjoy healthy profit margins. Made in the USA is once again being stamped on products with pride.

Magnetic vortex reveals key to spintronic speed limit

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? he evolution of digital electronics is a story of miniaturization -- each generation of circuitry requires less space and energy to perform the same tasks. But even as high-speed processors move into handheld smart phones, current data storage technology has a functional limit: magnetically stored digital information becomes unstable when too tightly packed. The answer to maintaining the breath-taking pace of our ongoing computer revolution may be the denser, faster, and smarter technology of spintronics.

Spintronic devices use electron spin, a subtle quantum characteristic, to write and read information. But to mobilize this emerging technology, scientists must understand exactly how to manipulate spin as a reliable carrier of computer code. Now, scientists at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have precisely measured a key parameter of electron interactions called non-adiabatic spin torque that is essential to the future development of spintronic devices. Not only does this unprecedented precision -- the findings to be published in the journal Nature Communications on August 28 -- guide the reading and writing of digital information, but it defines the upper limit on processing speed that may underlie a spintronic revolution.

"In the past, no one was able to measure the spin torque accurately enough for detailed comparisons of experiment and mathematical models," said Brookhaven Lab physicist Yimei Zhu. "By precisely imaging the spin orbits with a dedicated transmission electron microscope at Brookhaven, we advanced a truly fundamental understanding that has immediate implications for electronic devices. So this is quite exciting."

Speed Limits

Most prevailing technology fails to take full advantage of the electron, which features intrinsic quantum variables beyond the charge and flow driving electricity. One of these, a parameter known as spin direction, can be strategically manipulated to function as a high-density medium to store and transmit information in spintronics. But as any computer scientist can attest, dense data can mean very little without enough speed to process it efficiently.

"One of the big reasons that people want to understand this non-adiabatic spin torque term, which describes the ability to transfer spin via electrical currents, is that it basically determines how fast spintronic devices can be," said Shawn Pollard, a physics Ph.D. student at Brookhaven Lab and Stony Brook University and the lead author of the paper. "The read and write speed for data is dictated by the size of this number we measured, called beta, which is actually very, very big. That means the technology is potentially very, very fast."

Building a Vortex

Consider the behavior of coffee stirred rapidly in a mug: the motion of a spoon causes the liquid to spin, rising along the edges and spiraling low in the center. Because the coffee can't escape through the mug's porcelain walls, the trapped energy generates the cone-like vortex in the center. A similar phenomenon can be produced on magnetic materials to reveal fundamental quantum measurements.

This color graphic, seen here above an actual image of the vortex core captured by the transmission electron microscope, shows the trapped spins moving around the permalloy sample, which then generate the conical vortex core rising out of the center.

The Brookhaven physicists applied a range of high-frequency electric currents to a patterned film called permalloy, useful for its high magnetic permeability. This material, 50 nanometers (billionths of a meter) thick and composed of nickel and iron, was designed to strictly contain any generated magnetic field. Unable to escape, trapped electron spins combine and spiral within the permalloy, building into an observable and testable phenomenon called a magnetic vortex core.

"The vortex core motion is actually the cumulative effect of three distinct energies: the magnetic field induced by the current, and the adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin torques generated by electrons," Zhu said. "By capturing images of this micrometer (millionth of a meter) effect, we can deduce the precise value of the non-adiabatic torque's contribution to the vortex, which plays out on the nanoscale. Other measurements had very high error, but our technique offered the spatial resolution necessary to move past the wide range of previous results."

Disk Density

The high-speed, high-density hard drives in today's computers write information into spinning disks of magnetic materials, using electricity to toggle between magnetic polarity states that correspond to the "1" or "0" of binary computer code. But a number of intrinsic problems emerge with this method of data storage, notably limits to speed because of the spinning disk, which is made less reliable by moving parts, significant heat generation, and the considerable energy needed to write and read information.

Beyond that, magnetic storage suffers from a profound scaling issue. The magnetic fields in these devices exert influence on surrounding space, a so-called fringing field. Without appropriate space between magnetic data bits, this field can corrupt neighboring bits of digital information by inadvertently flipping "1" into "0." This translates to an ultimate limit on scalability, as these data bits need too much room to allow endless increases in data density.

Nanowire Racetracks

One pioneering spintronic prototype is IBM's Racetrack memory, which uses spin-coherent electric current to move magnetic domains, or discrete data bits, along a permalloy wire about 200 nanometers across and 100 nanometers thick. The spin of these magnetic domains is altered as they pass over a read/write head, forming new data patterns that travel back and forth along the nanowire racetrack. This process not only yields the prized stability of flash memory devices, but also offers speed and capacity exceeding disk drives.

"It takes less energy to manipulate spin torque parameters than magnetic fields," said Pollard. "There's less crosstalk between databits, and less heat is generated as information is written and read in spin-based storage devices. We measured a major component critical to unlocking the potential of spintronic technology, and I hope our work offers deeper insight into the fundamental origin of this non-adiabatic term."

The new measurement pins down a fundamental limit on data manipulation speeds, but the task of translating this work into practical limits on processor speed and hard drive space will fall to the scientists and engineers building the next generation of digital devices.

Zhu and Pollard collaborated with two physicists specializing in nanomagnetism, Kristen Buchanan of Colorado State University and Dario Arena of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), to push the precision capabilities of the transmission electron microscope. This research was conducted at Brookhaven Lab's Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Egypt's 'Google Earth pyramids' revisited

Google / DigitalGlobe / GeoEye

An intriguing site near an Egyptian town called Dimai consists of a large, square formation and smaller features.

By Alan Boyle

Remember that researcher who thought she spotted previously undiscovered Egyptian pyramids in Google Earth imagery? It turns out that there really are some ruins in the picture, but they?re not pyramids.

That's the verdict of an Italian archaeologist who has been surveying the area around the present-day town of Dimai in Egypt's Fayoum Desert.

"The features in Google images are well-known since 1925, when they were surveyed by G. Caton-Thompson and E.W. Gardner," Paola Davoli, an Egyptologist at Italy's University of Salento and co-director of the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, told me in an email. "They are natural mounds surmounted by a building (the biggest one) and by dug wells (in the other cases). For sure they are not pyramids, but their date and use are still not known."

The Dimai formations have been a subject of interest for many years. "We [have] still not dug them, but they will be the objects of future study by the Soknopaiou Nesos Project," Davoli said.

For more than a decade, the project has been doing a territorial survey of the area around Dimai, which was known as Soknopaiou Nesos during the Greco-Roman period in Egypt. The city is thought to have been founded by Ptolemy II in the third century B.C., on a site that shows evidence of habitation going back to the Neolithic period. During its heyday, it was situated on the shore of a large freshwater lake, but the lake has shrunk and gone salty since ancient times.

Davoli said the prevailing view is that the structures might have been watchtowers, designed to look over "an agricultural area or a paleo-lake just in front of them to the east," or perhaps tombs.

Dan Billin, a former newspaper reporter in New Hampshire who turned us on to the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, cites multiple reports about the Dimai site. "Micol was correct to think that at least one of the anomalies she saw on Google Earth was a man-made feature," Billin wrote in an email. "What she didn't manage to discover, however, was that archaeologists already knew about it, and that it's surrounded by numerous other archaeological sites."

Bob Brier, an Egyptologist based at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus, said in an email that Billin's evaluation of the site "sounds like a reasonable scenario."

Google Earth via Angela Micol

Several eroded features can be seen in this image of terrain about 12 miles from Abu Sidhum, a city on the Nile.

"Note, there is no mention of pyramids," Brier wrote.

Micol had pointed to another intriguing area of the Egyptian desert with four mounds and a large, triangular-shaped plateau, alongside the Nile in Upper Egypt, 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Abu Sidhum. The prevailing view is that those formations are not mounds or pyramids built by human hands, but are buttes carved by natural erosion.

Such formations are commonly seen in that part of the desert, James Harrell, professor emeritus of archaeological geology at the University of Toledo, told Life's Little Mysteries.

Childhood Obesity And How To Combat It | Life-Health-Happiness

This chronic condition has increased rapidly over the past years has finally gained national recognition. Many more children between the ages of two years old and five years old are already on there way to becoming the next generation of obese teens, and eventually obese adults and obese seniors. With obesity being one of the leading causes of morbidity, disability, discrimination, and employment problems, it has become one of the biggest public problems since tobacco use and exposure. Bad eating habits are not the only culprit, genetic diseases that can predispose children to become overweight cannot be forgotten. Diseases such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome are common in obese children, however still playing a larger role in the general overall population is bad eating and exercise habits.

It is the hope of many health educators, and medical professionals from psychologists to medical doctors that increased public awareness and preventive policies will eventually improve the situation. Professionals are treating this as a major public health concern that is threatening to damage our most precious resources, the children. Introduction of healthy play, healthy food choices, and recreation that promotes physical activity is on the top of the list for discussion and plans of battling this epidemic. Having caretakers take pro active measures to keep the child on the right track and setting good examples are key elements to helping these children to learn a healthier behavior and attitude towards their own health.

The annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has come to the conclusion that as many as one third of U.S. children are overweight or at high risk for childhood obesity. The health problems that will begin to manifest themselves from the heavy weight of such young children will start kids down a road the problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and increased risks of diabetes. These are diseases usually reserved to adults, not children. Combating this troubling condition must however, begin at home with the caregivers for these children. Improving overall diet, not dieting, and exercise is the key to resolving the problem. Protecting children?s health now and in the future will depend greatly on education of parents and caregivers to implement healthy daily living strategies.

Preventing an at-risk child from becoming overweight can start a process of healthy and active lifestyles to ensure longevity and energy throughout the child?s life. Little things such as: not getting into power struggles with the child over food, never use food as a behavior modification tool, and setting a good example are some starting places. This only perpetuates the same behavior and may cause psychological behaviors that are unwanted. Critical commenting, and taunting rarely if ever handles the situation with a positive outcome. Emphasizing what?s positive and benefits of changing behavior can make all of the difference in the world. Just fostering the child?s natural inclination to please you, have fun, and explore are perfect opportunities to introduce fitness routines, and reduce such incidents like eating out of boredom. If these things are done with every child in danger of becoming obese, then the numbers suffering will likely decrease.

Therefore, you should always keep in mind the health of yourself and your children. By keeping in shape yourself and displaying a good diet, you can impress upon them the importance of being a health-oriented individual. These habits will stay with them for all of their lives. You will also have quite a few benefits from eating healthy and slimming down. If you shed your extra weight, you will feel much better about yourself. If you want to find out more information about how you should change your diet habits, you should go to your local library for a book about diet and health. You can also talk to your doctor if you want some recommendations that are specific for your current health.

Ice Cream Sandwich update won't be coming to HTC's Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Even though Jelly Bean's the latest mobile OS to come out of Mountain View, there are still OEMs and carriers working on delivering the not-so-fresh Ice Cream Sandwich update to some of their earlier handsets. Now, unlike what we'd previously heard, it appears HTC's Incredible S won't be on the receiving end of said 4.0.x refresh, with Bell Mobility taking to Twitter to reveal that the Taiwanese outfit "will not be updating the Incredible S with ICS." Still, things could potentially take a turn for the best, as the Canadian carrier told a cheerless S owner, "If that changes, I'll let you know." As for us, well, we'll have to hold off on making any changes to our current Ice Cream Sandwich list.

What Apple's $1B victory means for consumers

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple's $1 billion court victory over Samsung poses a lot of questions for consumers. Will Samsung phones still be available for sale? Will they be more expensive? Will owners of existing phones need to worry?

A federal jury in San Jose, Calif., ruled late Friday that Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, had copied features of the iPhone and the iPad. That included the "bounce-back" behavior when a user scrolls to the end of a page and the ability to zoom in on an image by spreading two fingers.

The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. That was less than the $2.5 billion sought, but still a victory for Apple. Meanwhile, the jury rejected Samsung's patent-infringement claims against Apple. An appeal is expected.

For now, here's what the verdict means for consumers:

___

Q. Can I still buy a Samsung phone or tablet computer today?

A. Yes. The jury didn't prohibit sales of the devices. However, Apple will ask a judge to ban U.S. sales of several Samsung devices. A Sept. 20 hearing has been scheduled. If the judge agrees, that would affect many Samsung devices, but not the most recent ones, such as the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note smartphones. Most of the two dozen devices covered by the lawsuit aren't sold in meaningful numbers in the U.S.

Q. Was Friday's verdict final?

A. No. Samsung is challenging it. First, Samsung will first ask the trial judge to toss the verdict. Then it will appeal to a court in Washington that specializes in patent appeals. Samsung has vowed to take the fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.

Q. If Apple still prevails, will this drive Samsung out of the phone business?

A. That's not likely. The verdict doesn't apply outside the U.S. and doesn't apply to the latest Samsung devices either. The $1 billion in damages represents 1.5 percent of Samsung Electronics Co.'s annual revenue.

Q. Will this make Samsung phones more expensive?

A. Possibly. Samsung may have to pay Apple substantial royalties on each phone. Consumers will likely pay for that somehow, but it may not be noticeable in stores. Phone companies such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless already subsidize each smartphone by hundreds of dollars to get retail prices down to $99 or $199.

Q. What does this mean for the Samsung phone I already own?

A. This doesn't directly affect phones that have already been sold, even if they are the models that the judge decides to ban. In the long run, it could reduce enthusiasm around Android, the operating system from Google that Samsung uses in the devices in question. That might mean fewer applications for Android from outside parties. That will take years to play out, but could conceivably affect the resale value of your phone.

Q. Does this mean Samsung phones will look different in the future?

A. Possibly. The jury dinged Samsung's flagship Galaxy line for copying the overall look and feel of the iPhone and for using the stock icons with rounded corners that come with Android. Also at issue was the way Android can tell the difference between the touch of a single finger and several fingers. Samsung might delay some models to give it time to rework their look and feel.

Q. What does this mean for other Android phones, such as those from LG Electronics Inc., HTC Corp. and Google's Motorola Mobility?

A. Although the ruling applies only to Samsung, it will have an indirect effect on all makers of Android devices. Apple could go after them with arguments similar to the ones used against Samsung. But Friday's ruling is not precedential, meaning that other courts could reach completely different decisions.

Most likely, makers of Android phones will take more care to make their phones distinguishable from the iPhone.

It's also a standard tactic in patent cases to countersue. In this case, Samsung's patent claims against Apple were thrown out by the court. But Google has been buying up patents and could help other phone makers mount more effective countersuits.

Q. What does this mean for Android devices around the world?

A. The ruling applies only to the U.S., though Apple and Samsung are waging similar battles in other countries. On the same day Samsung lost in the U.S., it partially won a fight in South Korea. A Seoul court imposed a partial ban on South Korean sales of products from both companies. That verdict didn't affect the latest models either.

Q. What does this mean for Apple?

A. Analysts say it could help Apple gain market share at the expense of Android phones, if these have to avoid some attractive and easy-to-use features introduced by Apple.

Despite being a driving force in phone development since the iPhone was launched in 2007, Apple has only 19 percent of the worldwide smartphone market, according to IDC. The high price of the iPhone keeps it out of the reach of many consumers. Meanwhile, Android phones have 64 percent of the market.

Could Paul Ryan's small business ties aid the GOP? | The Salt Lake ...

(FILE | The Associated Press) In this Monday, June 18, 2012, file photo, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., looks on during a campaign event with Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at Monterey Mills in Janesville, Wis. When small business owners vote in the presidential election in November, one factor in their choice may be Paul Ryan?s ties to a small company, the construction firm in Janesville, whose roots go back to the business his great-grandfather started in 1884.

New York ?

On his way to becoming a congressman from his hometown of Janesville, Wis., Paul Ryan worked in a small business ? a construction company with roots that reach back to the firm that his great-grandfather started in 1884.

Although the future GOP vice presidential candidate worked at Ryan Inc. Central doing marketing for just a short time ? from 1997-98 ? that experience may help the Romney-Ryan ticket. The obstacles that small businesses face hiring more workers are among the biggest issues in this presidential election. The perception that Ryan understands their problems could bring in votes ? even though he was chosen largely because of his conservative stance on federal spending.

"I always appreciate folks who have spent time in the real world," says Nick Balletta, CEO of TalkPoint, a New York firm that runs online broadcasts for businesses. "In the real world, there?s payroll that needs to be made, bills that need to be paid and customers that need to be satisfied."

The GOP might convince business owners that despite the brevity of Ryan?s time at the company that "it was a valid experience and he would be more likely to understand their situation," says Trey Grayson, director of Harvard University?s Institute of Politics. He also may appeal to independent voters including small business owners in parts of states like Wisconsin, Florida, Nevada, Illinois and Michigan that have struggled more than other areas of the country, says David McCuan, a political science professor at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.

"Ryan helps at some level in certain states," he says. "It?s an open question of whether he helps in the big picture."

Both Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden have spent almost all their working lives in politics. Biden was elected to the New Castle, Del., County Council shortly before he turned 27 and to the Senate when he was nearly 30. Ryan was 28 when he was elected to Congress. Biden?s resume doesn?t include time at a small business, but he talks about the financial struggles of his father, who lost money in business ventures, had to move in with Biden?s grandfather and had jobs that included cleaning boilers and managing a car dealership. That has helped voters identify with his middle-class childhood, McCuan says.

"Biden does a really good job of connecting with the common working person" and that appeals to small business owners, he says.

Ryan has that quality as well, and "brings that everyman kind of pitch" to the GOP ticket, McCuan says. That can mitigate the feeling among voters that Romney can?t connect with people, he says. But, he adds, both candidates look like a regular guy, someone you?d want to have a beer with.

Biden?s experience as vice president is more relevant than his resume.? "No matter what the background of Joe Biden was before, that trumps everything else," Grayson says. ?

story continues below

Nonetheless, Ryan?s small business ties will likely come up during the campaign.

Ryan Inc.?s operations include excavation and building site preparation for commercial and residential construction. It also builds golf courses and creates wetlands. Although it?s based in Janesville, much of its work is done elsewhere ? it has offices in Elgin, Ill., and Hagerstown, Md., and has worked on projects across the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.

"What we do is move piles of dirt from one place to another" using equipment like bulldozers, says Adam Ryan, company president and Paul Ryan?s cousin. Their grandfathers were brothers.

The company has between 100 and 125 full-time employees at its three locations and during the construction season, that number rises to between 300 and 500 workers, Adam Ryan says. Ryan Inc. is small enough that it doesn?t make the list of the 40 biggest employers in Rock County, where Janesville is located. But the business is highly regarded in the city of nearly 64,000 because of the connection to the Ryan family, says Vic Grassman, Janesville?s director of economic development.

The cousins went to high school together but didn?t work together at Ryan Inc. Adam joined the firm after Paul was elected to Congress. Paul Ryan, who earned less than $30,000 at Ryan Inc., helped the company "figure out what kind of work we should be pursuing," Adam says.

"My recollection is that it did lead to projects for us," Adam says. Neither he nor the Romney campaign could provide specifics. Paul Ryan doesn?t have an ownership stake in the company, according to his cousin and the campaign.

Like other Republican lawmakers, Paul Ryan has called for the repeal of the health care law that the Supreme Court upheld in June. He?s critical of government spending and regulations created under the Obama administration. Although Ryan and Romney have campaigned on issues like health care and regulations that affect small companies, Adam Ryan says his biggest concern as a small business owner is getting more sales in a construction environment that remains weak following the recession.

Moleskine works with Evernote on scannable notebooks

13 hrs.

A new collaboration between notebook maker Moleskine and media syncing app Evernote is a good example of analog and digital in harmony instead of conflict.?

The product announced Friday is a special line of notebooks designed specifically to work with the Evernote, a service and an?app that, among other things, syncs documents and media between devices. The app allows you to take a picture of a page of text and art and have it automatically adjusted and scanned for text; the new notebooks have a special dotted rule that Evernote claims is optimized for their image processing.

In addition to the scanning feature, which is useful but not limited to Moleskine products, the notebooks will come with several pages of small stickers which, when scanned by the app, will add tags and other functions to the resulting document. For instance, in digitizing a few pages of logo designs, a check-mark sticker could be placed next to the best one, making it easy to find and link to online.

Moleskine's CEO, Arrigo Berni, spoke with NBC News regarding other crossovers between Moleskin's analog?paper world and the fast-moving digital one.

Berni?confirmed that the company is looking into adding further functionality to the Moleskine ecosystem; when asked about other services and partners that Moleskine might be interested in working with, he said "there certainly will be" other partnerships in the "future." For example, he aid,?Moleskine is "working with a print-on-demand company" to enable the movement of digital to analog, just as the Evernote partnership enables the opposite.

But regarding tie-ins and co-branding, Berni is cautious. For items like cases for phones and tablets, the problem is mainly technical: "The challenge for us on that front is keeping up with the pace of innovation in the industry," especially since companies like Apple don't like to share?details of new products?beforehand. "What we've decided to do now is to design cases?that?are versatile enough to fit multiple tablets," he said.

Moleskine?created an iPad app some time ago, and a?new version just went live Friday?that Berni believes is a?major plus, improving the look and adding Evernote syncing. But as for making or branding their own device??

"We've given it some thought in passing ? but you have to be careful," he said. "With Moleskine you're dealing with a very small brand." What people seek in Moleskine products is what Berni called "the intangible dimension: the aesthetics, the design, the culture." Trying to stretch that too far can dilute the brand and frustrate consumers.

Berni noted?that the nature of content creation was changing, though, with powerful digital?tools increasingly supplanting pen, paper?and brush ? "it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," he said. But as the company demonstrates, digital and analog don't have to exist entirely?separate from each other, and it's happy to be working on tools that help bridge that divide.

The new "Smart Notebooks" are available for pre-order?in gridded or ruled versions on Moleskine's website, and?buying one will get you access to Evernote's premium services for three months. A pocket-sized version will run you $25, and a larger one goes for $30.?

Wasserman Schultz Refuses to Acknowledge She?s Misquoting the LA Times After Baffled Cooper Calls Her Out

Anderson Cooper Blasts Debbie Wasserman Schultz for Misquoting LA Times Article on Mitt RomneyAnderson Cooper/DWS2

Regardless of whether or not you agree with Anderson Cooper?s politics, the guy is arguably one of the last real journalists left in the mainstream media. During his CNN show on Thursday, the host proved that during his ?Keeping Them Honest? segment where he ripped into Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) for ?misquoting? a Los Angeles Times article in a fundraising email, in which she attempted to tie GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney?s abortion stance to Rep. Todd Akin?s. Akin came under fire this week from all sides for arguing that women?s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of ?legitimate rape.?

Cooper was persistent in trying to coax an apology out of Schultz, but she remained defiant throughout the entire segment.

The email in question argued that the GOP ?just voted to embrace Akin?s position by including a constitutional ban on all abortions ? even in cases of rape or incest ? in their 2012 platform.?

Schultz also criticizes Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in the email for ?saying they don?t entirely agree with that plank.? Cooper then addressed the LA Times quote that Schultz used to make her point, which he says she ?misquoted.? From the email:

??but guess what? The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the platform was, and I quote, ?written at the direction of Romney?s campaign.??

Those exact words did actually appear in the LA Times, Cooper explained, but Schultz took them ?completely out of context.?

Now, here is the entire paragraph that was printed in the Times earlier this week:

There is no doubt about who is in charge, of course. Delegates for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney are voting down substantive changes to the platform language that was written at the direction of Romney?s campaign. The biggest question is whether the tone remains polite, as it was at the outset of two days of deliberations, or whether dissenters spoil the image of harmony that the Romney campaign is working hard to produce.

You see, the Times article is saying the Romney campaign helped make suggestions for the GOP platform, but it makes no mention of abortion policy. Cooper confronted Schultz for taking the quote out of context to further her own political agenda.

?First, the abortion language in the 2012 platform, it hardly differs from the 2008 language and the 2004 language in the platform. That language obviously wasn?t written by the Romney campaign,? Cooper said, adding that a CNN reporter was present while the platform was being crafted and he said Romney advisers didn?t make suggestions on abortion plan.

?Factually speaking, Mitt Romney did not design or direct the writing of the Republican Party platform? you can?t say they designed the abortion section,? Cooper continued.

It seemed obvious enough that Schultz had been caught bending the truth to smear the Romney campaign. Surely she would apologize, right? Not even close.

?Anderson, we definitely can say it,? Schultz replied, then trying to justify her allegation by saying Romney has ?embraced? the party?s platform.

Even after Cooper accused her outright of wrongly trying to tie the Romney/Ryan ticket to the misguided abortion stance of Rep. Akin, she still wouldn?t relent. He then asked whether she acknowledges that Romney does, in fact, support abortion in cases of rape, incest and danger to the life of the mother. But because it didn?t fit her narrative, she dodged the question and instead regurgitated talking points about the stark differences between Romney and President Obama on women?s rights and how Republicans are evil and make no exceptions when it comes to abortion.

Cooper tried to keep the conversation on point and told Schultz that her email claimed the Romney campaign helped draft the GOP abortion platform, when it didn?t ? the campaign didn?t even offer suggestions on the topic.

Finally, Schultz at least admitted that Romney?s views on abortion are not identical with the official Republican platform but made sure to inject an insult, saying Romney ?talks the talk? but ?certainly doesn?t walk the walk,? insinuating that Romney says one thing out loud and believes another.

Cooper eventually revisited the issue of her misquoting the LA Times article in her fundraising email.

?Anderson, it doesn?t matter,? Schultz said to an increasingly frustrated Cooper.

?It does,? he shot back. ?Your saying it?s proof of your position, and it?s not proof of your position.? He later added, ?I think what you say does matter.?

Schultz again would not actually address Cooper?s concern that the LA Times was misquoted and again fell back on talking points about how Romney doesn?t want women to have the ability to make their own ?reproductive choices.?

?But just as you don?t like being misquoted, I don?t like being misquoted, I?m sure the LA Times doesn?t like being misquoted to back up your political position,? Cooper added.

Seemingly fed-up with his guest, Cooper finally asked Schultz if she would admit that the quote in the email is ?completely incorrect.?

?No, I don?t acknowledge that,? Schultz replied, explaining that Romney can?t ?separate himself? from the Republican party platform.

?He has,? Cooper said, exasperated. The host was unable to make any further progress with his guest.

Education Secretary: Shop around for college aid

By NBC News staff

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan joined us for a live web chat on Friday, Aug. 24, to discuss education-related topics, such as student loans and the cost of college.

Here?s one of the Secretary?s answers to questions from the live chat. (See below for the full Q&A.)

Phil asked:

"Would you recommend students submit their FAFSAs to multiple schools to comparison shop among aid packages offered?"

Secretary Duncan replied:

"Yes, students absolutely should submit their FAFSA applications to multiple schools. We know that 75% send their FAFSA to only one school, which makes comparison shopping impossible."

"Students should look at multiple schools when choosing college and choose one based on what's best for them, considering price, the quality of education, and graduation rates."

Secretary Duncan is the ninth U.S. secretary of education.

He has served in this post since his confirmation by the U.S. Senate on Jan. 20, 2009, following his nomination by President Barack Obama.

Norwegian mass killer sentenced to 21 years

OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was jailed for a maximum term on Friday when judges declared him sane enough to answer for the murder of 77 people last year, drawing a smirk of triumph from the self-styled warrior against Islam.

An unrepentant Breivik, 33, gave the Oslo court a stiff-armed, clench-fisted salute before being handed the steepest possible penalty, 21 years. His release, however, can be put off indefinitely should he still pose a threat to a liberal society left traumatized by his bomb and shooting rampage last July.

Justifying blasting a government building and gunning down dozens of teenagers at a summer camp as a service to a nation threatened by immigration, he had said only acquittal or death would be worthy outcomes. But his biggest concern was being declared insane, a fate he said would be "worse than death."

[Related: Q&A about the Breivik trial]

Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen dismissed a prosecution call for her to label Breivik mad, a ruling that would have seen him confined indefinitely to psychiatric care rather than prison.

Some survivors of the slaughter at the Labour party youth camp on Utoeya island, and much of the Norwegian public, had been keen to see Breivik held clearly responsible for his actions - and to avoid the insanity verdict that would have prompted him to demand lengthy and traumatic appeals hearings.

For many Norwegians, still shocked by their bloodiest day since World War Two, the details were academic, however.

"He is getting what he deserves," said Alexandra Peltre, 18, whom Breivik shot in the thigh on Utoeya. "This is karma striking back at him. I do not care if he is insane or not, as long as he gets the punishment that he deserves."

Breivik, who had surrendered to police on the island without a fight, admitted blowing up the Oslo government headquarters with a fertilizer bomb, killing eight, on Friday, July 22, 2011, then shooting 69 at the ruling party's summer youth camp.

Dressed in a black suit with a tie and still sporting the blond, under-chin beard familiar from the 10 weeks of hearings that ended in June, Breivik smirked when he entered the courtroom and smiled again as the judge read out the verdict.

He will not appeal, his lawyer said. "He will accept this verdict," Geir Lippestad told Reuters. During the trial Breivik said: "I would do it again" - an attitude which, if maintained, would prevent his being released at the end of his sentence.

BEREAVED SATISFIED

A lawyer for some victims and their families said they, too, were satisfied: "I am pleased, although that's not really the right word, and relieved. This is what we hoped for," said Mette Yvonne Larsen, who represented some of those affected in court.

"This is justice served and they are happy it's over and will never have to see him again."

The killings shook the nation of five million which had prided itself as a safe haven from much of the world's troubles, raising questions about the prevalence of far-right views in a country where oil wealth has attracted rising immigration.

But the trial, which some had dreaded Breivik might turn into a "circus" of hatred, has been hailed as a model of dispassionate Scandinavian justice that offered closure to the grieving; and Norwegians refused to let fear drive them to curb their easy-going daily lives with cumbersome security measures.

Breivik will now be kept in isolation inside Ila Prison on the outskirts of Oslo inside relatively spacious quarters that include a separate exercise room, a computer and a television.

His diatribes against centre-left governments' acceptance of Muslim immigration, spread over the Internet, and aired on television during the trial, drew support from a militant few in Europe. But even most of the hardest right-wing fringe groups kept their distance from the self-confessed mass killer.

Police found his claims to belong to a shadowy European network he called the Knights Templar, a nod to the mediaeval Crusader order, were probably the imaginings of an angry loner.

Norway's anti-immigration Progress Party, which Breivik had once briefly joined, suffered in municipal elections after the massacre, forcing the second biggest party in parliament to tone down its rhetoric. Opinion poll support for liberal immigration policies even grew and the attack brought many young people, now often referred to as the Utoeya generation, into politics.

DEFIANT KILLER

Although his victims were mostly teenagers, with some as young as 14, he rejected being called a child murderer, arguing that his victims were brainwashed "cultural Marxists" whose political activism would adulterate pure Norwegian blood.

He stalked his victims dressed as a policeman, tricking them into thinking he was the help sent from the shore after the initial attack. He then shot them from close range before finishing them with a shot to the head.

"I stand by what I have done and I would still do it again." he said during his court testimony.

Breivik, a high school dropout who once spent an entire year devoting himself to computer games, suffered troubles from early childhood and a psychiatric evaluation proposed removing him from his family, a verdict social workers finally rejected.

After business failures and frauds that included selling fake diplomas and a diamond scam in Liberia, he moved back in with his mother in 2006. It was then, she said, that he became obsessed with politics and changed from a "kind and caring" son to becoming "completely crazy".

Some Norwegians now believe their country must draw on the experience to debate issues like immigration, and a commission investigating the attack also concluded the country need radical changes, including gun controls and more sweeping police powers.

Still, very little has changed over the past year; ministers still walk the streets of Oslo without bodyguards and private cars can drive right up to the parliament building.

"This attack has not in any way succeeded in redefining our liberal democracy," said Oslo University philosophy professor Lars Fredrik Svendsen. "The Norwegian judicial system has shown itself as rock solid during this trial."

How makers of phones and tablets are faring

Many companies including Nokia and Research in Motion have been struggling to compete with Apple and manufacturers of devices running Google's Android software. That shows in some of the earnings reports released so far for the latest quarter.

Here's a look at how makers of phones and tablet computers are doing:

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to report another operating loss in the current quarter, which ends Sept. 1, as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 19: Nokia Corp. says its net loss nearly quadrupled in the second quarter on sagging sales of smartphones, which fell 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million. The company's stock jumped, however, as sales of low-end phones buoyed revenue and shipments of the new Lumia phones, which run on Windows software and will replace the older smartphone models, were not as bad as feared. In North America, sales of the Lumia phones offset declines in traditional Symbian devices.

Google Inc., which completed its purchase of Motorola Mobility during the quarter, says it saw strengths in North America with Verizon Wireless, driven by the Razr Maxx device. But it says international sales of basic cellphones and mid-tier smartphones declined. Google reiterates that 1 million new Android devices from various phone makers are being activated each day, with more than 400 million activated worldwide.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase and a quarterly record. But average selling prices for both products were down.

? July 25: LG Electronics reports a lower quarterly profit as its mobile phone division sank to a loss. Basic handset sales declined while expenses to promote its new smartphones went up. The company says profitability at the mobile communication business will not be too bad for the rest of the year with new high-end mobile device launches due in North America and Japan. But it stops short of guiding investors on when the company can fully turn around its mobile business

? July 27: Samsung Electronics Co. reports another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones. Samsung benefited as rivals including Apple had yet to release new models. The performance in mobile phones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions.

IDC reports that Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones. Samsung had a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. The drop is typical several months after the release of a new iPhone model.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says revenue in its mobile division more than doubled, but that's largely because it took full ownership of Sony Mobile, once a joint venture with LM Ericsson. Had the transaction been reflected in the year-ago quarter, growth would have been about 14 percent. Sony says more people have been buying smartphones rather than the cheaper, basic phones. It's also sold more smartphones, mostly because of strong performance of Xperia S and Xperia acro HD.

? Aug. 3: Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reports a 58 percent drop in profit, its third consecutive quarterly decline as intensifying competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. hurt sales. The company had hoped to win back some of its market with the launch of "HTC One" series, which offers users a better camera and music experience. But following the huge popularity of Samsung's Galaxy handsets, the model's key U.S. carrier, AT&T, recently slashed the prices of "HTC One" by half. HTC says the U.S. will continue to be an important market, but that China "will be a key driving force for our future growth."

? Aug. 8: Research group IDC says the success of Samsung's Android phones helped Google's operating system extend its dominance in the smartphone market. There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year. The gains come largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp. Apple's market share dropped slightly, but the company shipped more iPhones than a year ago.

? Aug. 13: Google says it's cutting about 4,000 jobs at its Motorola Mobility cellphone business and will close or consolidate about one-third of its 90 locations. The reductions represent about 20 percent of Motorola Mobility's 20,000 employees, and 7 percent of Google's overall work force. Two-third of the job cuts will take place outside of the U.S., Google said. The job eliminations come three months after Google bought the once-dominant U.S. cellphone maker for $12.5 billion, chiefly with a view to using its large patent portfolio to bolster its legal defenses.

? Aug. 15: Rating agency Standard and Poor's downgrades Nokia Corp.'s long-term corporate credit rating further into junk status amid concerns over the cellphone company's deteriorating profitability.

? Aug. 16: Samsung Electronics Co. begins selling the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet in the U.S., the U.K. and South Korea. It has a digital pen and a faster processor than the iPad, but has a lower screen resolution.

Lenovo Group Ltd. says smartphone shipments grew 44 percent for a market share of 11 percent. Lenovo says it sold 5 million smartphones in China in the latest quarter, passing PC sales by number of units for the first time.

Coming up:

? Sept. 27: Research In Motion Ltd.
